Tony was my biggest hero as he gave me my first break into car journalism. I never got to see him race, but I heard about him from our family friend Stirling Moss, who said I should see if he'd give me any work experience when he was editing Classic Car magazine and I was a nerdy 20-something classic car nut, studying journalism and trying to break into automotive journalism. He not only let me work alongside him and the CC designer, he also let me go to lots of local car club meetings and report on them for the mag. He even paid me for going to these meet-ups, many of which I'd have gone to for fun anyway! Although on the outside he seemed rather an imposing figure - a tall, wiry man sitting behind a big desk at the end of a long dark room, whenever I went in there with an idea for a story he was always really enthusiastic and said yes. Without this first break from Tony I don't know if I'd have made it into car journalism. I got to know him better in recent years as a SGMW member, and also have happy memories of chatting to him and Charis at various club meetings.
