Timothy Gotora

June 14, 1980 - January 19, 2021

Mr Timothy Gotora, a Zimbabwean national, has been a valued member of the ARC Group since he joined in July 2016, with over 12 years working experience in environment and sustainable development sector, specializing in climate change and variability resilience, adaptation and mitigation planning and programming. As a Country Engagement Manager, Timothy managed the in-country processes for several ARC member states. Immediately prior to joining the ARC project, Timothy served as Programme Officer at the SADC Secretariat, providing policy and technical planning and coordination services to the 15-nation SADC Regional Economic Community on climate change issues. He had also worked in related capacities with the Adam Smith International’s Vuna Africa Project, UNDP Zimbabwe, SNV REDD+ Energy and Agriculture Programme, SNV Zimbabwe, Soil and More International BV, Plan International Zimbabwe, and the Environmental Management Agency of Zimbabwe among others. Timothy got ill early January 2021 and was diagnosed with Covid-19. He was later admitted at the Sunninghill hospital on 9th January 2021, where he passed on the morning of January 19th. We have lost a great talent, a valued colleague and most of all a dear friend to all of us. Timothy will be deeply missed, leaving here with us only fond memories of his hardworking spirit, humility, his friendliness and the lunch hour chess moments with colleagues in the canteen. He will be profoundly missed by all of us, the disaster risk management community, especially in the SADC region where he has spent most of his working life and built very strong ties with our member countries.

During my time at ARC Timothy was always a pleasant and supportive force in his own quiet way. I had the opportunity to travel with him to Botswana on several occasions as part of the initial phase of establishing a partnership with SADC. Timothy was instrumental in this endeavour and the associated successes. Importantly, during these visits it was also clear to me that he was liked and appreciated by his colleagues. They always readily offered a friendly laugh, joke and their support. Indeed, a great loss. My sincere condolences to his family and the ARC team.
