Applied Materials expresses, on behalf of all the chemometrics community, our profound sadness at the passing of our Pharma advisory board member, Professor Svante Wold. Svante was a pioneer in the field of chemometrics and the father of the Umetrics Group. He passed away today, 04 January 2022 in the afternoon, surrounded by his family at his home in Hollis, New Hampshire at the age of 81.
The term ‘chemometrics’ was coined by Svante in a 1971 grant application, and the International Chemometrics Society was formed shortly thereafter by Svante and Bruce Kowalski, two pioneers in the field. Svante was also a professor of organic chemistry at Umeå University, Sweden.
Svante was an innovator without equal; a leader of the data analytics field who gave meaning to multivariant process understanding with real-world application. Leading companies across the world today leverage the technology developed by Svante to improve quality and productivity in their process development and manufacturing.
We share this moment of deep loss with Nouna Kettaneh, Svante’s soulmate and source of strength and insight, who has made a monumental contribution in her own right to the development of chemometrics, Umetrics and SmartFactory Rx. Svante and Nouna’s partnership brought significant contributions to society.
We pray that Svante’s soul will rest in peace and that his spirit will stand sentry over the future of advanced machine learning and data analytics as Svante saw it for the last 50 years.
Our deepest condolences
