Steven lived life to the fullest and embraced every moment until he could no longer. An optimist who loved nothing better than a good meal in good company, Steven's most common expression "absolutely fantastic!" epitomized how he enjoyed life. It was his enthusiasm for life that helped him fight his battle with metastatic melanoma for almost 6 years and allowed him to be back in the comfort of his and Nelly van de Kimmenade’s home with the 3 dogs for his final days.
Born in Lisbon, raised in Edinburgh, and resident in the Algarve since 1984, Steven and Nelly enjoyed over 40 years together – from friendship, companionship and later married in December 2024. Together, they became a legend. Over the years, friends of family and friends of friends became part of their web of famous lunches and other outings. And together they enjoyed their daily lunches, walking their dogs, travel, and lots of conversation. Their banter helped keep Steven going – and their relationship unique.
Steven was loyal to his friends and family. He is survived by his sister Gillian with whom he travelled to numerous parts of Europe, the US and South Africa either to visit family, friends or to simply travel. Both enjoyed history, politics and movies – conversation between the 2 was never dull.
As a loyal friend, Steven was generous in every sense of the word and could always to be counted on to help others. His friendships were numerous, some dating back to his very early childhood, and he always remained in touch.
Steven was avidly interested in history, culture and politics, football and rugby, was extremely knowledgeable and had an incredible memory for facts.
His absence leaves a huge void in the life of all those who knew him well. He will be deeply missed; especially by his wife Nelly van de Kimmenade, his sister, Gillian Crawford, Nelly’s daughters, son-in-law and grandchildren, his dear friends, extended family and all those whose lives he touched, as well as their 3 dogs, Kiki, Mika and Pico.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for friends and family from nearby and faraway can join in remembering Steven. The date and location will be announced as soon as possible.
