I met Simon when he was carrying out a challenging and demanding role in the MPS with characteristic professionalism, skill and humanity. Our path crossed again at the very advent of the IPCC, where all of Simon’s qualities helped to shape some of the most important work that the organisation undertook and, fortunately for me, I often had the pleasure, thereafter, of bumping into him at Lord’s. To coin a cricketing term, Simon was indeed a great all-rounder, combining empathy and kindness with an unflappable nature, keen judgment and a wonderful sense of humour. It was my privilege to know Simon and I shall always have the fondest thoughts of him. My heartfelt condolences.
