My mum Shukla was a beloved wife, mother of two sons, mother-in-law, grandmother and a mum to everyone in our family. Mum was strong, kind, warm and loving. She would remember everyone’s birthdays, important events and despite being so sick she would remember the dates of all her appointments. Mum taught us how to be caring. She was a role model who taught us to share and be there for people in need. She loved feeding us and her hospitable nature has rubbed off on a few of us in the family as well. Though Mum is no longer with us in person, she will continue to live in our memories, we will continue to cook her recipes and we will always feel her presence when her garden blooms with colour.

I remember when I was a kid, I had spent some of my school holidays with Sutla mousi. I remember Mausi teaching me how to make peera and barfi because she knew it was my favourite. I also remember going with Mausa and Mausi to clean a flat and accidentally locking all three of us in the bathroom of the flat. In the end Mousa had to climb on top of the toilet and jump out the window to get us all out.

Aunty was an amazing lady with an equally big heart. She always welcomed me in her home with a big smile and lots of delicious food. I cannot forget the Kheer she made and always packed me a container of it. She met my daughter 5 years ago and gave her an Elsa doll that my daughter loves and still keeps by her bedside table. Aunty always had a quiet and calm demeanour that made everyone love her. Both her and uncle helped me a lot when I lived in Wellington and looked after me as their own. I will forever cherish these moments and miss Aunty a lot..may aunty rest in peace and may God give uncle the strength to live with the beautiful memories he and aunty created together.

Thinking of you all at this time. Unfortunately I met aunty only a few times but whenever I did, she was so warm and loving. Whenever I remember her, I remember her red bindi that she wore so proudly. Sending love to everyone at this difficult time. May her beautiful soul rest in peace. Love Ati and Manna.

I would like to say to everyone in the family - in Fiji, US, Australia or anywhere else in the world, mum talked about all of you and I can assure you that you were all in her thoughts while she was unwell at home. I have heard so may stories about all of you, even though I haven't met lots of you even after 15 years of my marriage to Ashu. Mummy is so amazing, I don't even feel she is not here. I never made the effort to learn her recipes because I took it for granted that she will always be here to feed me. I really missed her Christmas Pudding this year because no one can make it like her. She bought me something every birthday, every Diwali and every Christmas .. there were times when Ashu did not get anything but I did. So I know I was very special to her. And the feeling is mutual. I know she is gone in person but she has left bits of her in every one of us. Another person I want to mention in this message and I really look up to is Daddy. I have never met anyone like Daddy. He was an exceptional husband to mum during her last months - he has taught me that difficult times are temporary. I know this is a message for mum but I feel that this was Daddy's journey as well and therefore I wanted to mention him.

I will never forget sharing the amazing food that Shukla would prepare for us every time we visited. It was always cooked with so much love and she made the best roti I've ever had in my life still to this day. We once all ate on the floor together when they moved into their new house and it was so special, as was everytime we shared tea and the best food ever. I always felt so welcome in Shukla and Jack's presence, beautiful amazing people and I will miss you fua xxxx.

Ombhur bhuvah swah  Tat savitur varenyam  Bhargo devasya dheemahi  Dhiyo yo nah prachodayat For the last 50 years, Mrs. Shukla Singh has been in my life as my very first Bhabhi, but was more like an older sister. She taught me, not just to look put together at all times, but she made sure I knew how to cook well and how to be the ultimate hostess. But more importantly, how to be the backbone of the family. How to be the silent strength of the family, and how to make a house into a home. She was a Leader. She did not panic during a crisis, she took charge. Always composed, and always kept going. She did all of this, without saying a word. It was her actions and movements that taught me. I had the good fortune of being able to see her within the last weeks of her life. Seeing the way Jagdish Bhaiya and her children cared for her, I knew and saw that they too had learned her silent lessons, and she was in the very best hands and had the very best care. Lessons that go on and on for generations to come. Never to be forgotten and always in our hearts. Our Condolences, Lalita Singh and Family.

I remember Shukla fua as someone that was kind, gentle and with a lovely laugh. Sometimes she was laughing with me but other times at me. She was a store of the family history and remembered everyone's birthday. She's the person that reminded me most of Aaiji. When I was young I grew up with her kids. I wanted to be like my older cousins. A memory that sticks in my mind is making puri with her and Jack fufa. Fufa and I rolled the puri and she would fry it. I could never get the puri perfectly round. It tasted beautiful just out of the pan. I didn't want to wait for the curry to eat it with. She and fufa also took me to see the giant squid and the earthquake house. I got the proper Wellington experience. Fua loved her family. She and fufa made the trip over from New Zealand to meet Dhillon not long after he was born. They spoilt him with cuddles, play and plenty of attention. I'm grateful that Dhillon got to meet her. She never forgot his or Sophia's birthday. I'll try to remember to be as kind as fua was.
