Sam Young

May 30, 1967 - June 19, 2025

Sam Young was a passionate, caring and talented nurse. At the time of her death she was the Interim Chief Nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, near Oswestry. Sam had extensive senior level experience within primary, secondary and community health care in Scotland, England and the Military. She had served for more than 16 years with the Armed Forces, and was still serving as a Senior Officer in the British Army Reserve; where she was Infection Prevention and Control Lead for 202 (M) Multi-Role Medical Regiment. Starting her career in her native Scotland, she moved to Shropshire in November 2018. Sam worked for Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, before taking up a role in Primary Care at Severn Fields Medical Practice in Shrewsbury. She then went on to work for Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust before taking up her last post at RJAH. Sam was held in extremely high regard thanks to her excellent clinical knowledge, her absolute dedication to patient care, but most notably the quality of her character. She was a kind, fun and compassionate person. She will be missed enormously.

I've tried to write something here so many times yet hadn't managed to because I just can't believe that you're no longer walking this earth with us. I've never met anyone quite like you, with the all the amazing qualities and values you possessed, your leadership was incredible. You always had a way of getting the best out of us, and our biggest gift to you is to embody all of your attributes within ourselves so that we can keep your vision alive. You treated everyone with kindness and understanding, and would often help me to come up with better ways of dealing with things. I have so much to thank you for, including random parcels of sweet treats on my desk, just because. We would often go on a chocolate run to the shop together and mostly rant along the way. You had the best sense of humour, and we got on so well. Thank you for believing in me, encouraging me and empowering me to have confidence in myself. We were privileged to have developed a strong bond between our team that became our IPC family at RJAH. You also touched my family's hearts, including my husband Lee, who had enjoyed meeting you in person for the first time whilst you were dressed as Madonna at the works Christmas party! He thought you were hilarious, and you introduced yourself to him as my friend, not my boss, because that's just how we clicked. I have to say though, he was disappointed when you changed your Land Rover to an electric car - and he took great pleasure in jibbing you about it. You knew my little girls too, and I will never forget the lovely things you said about them. I miss you so much Sam, I can see you walking into our office just to say hi, and to get your sugar fix before heading off to your next meeting. I don't know how you did it all; you were so much to so many, and boy oh boy we miss you and there will never be another leader like you, but we can't forget how lucky we all are to have worked alongside you, and for me to have had such a lovely friend. Rest easy Sam, we will never stop talking about you. You were so loved xxxx
