Sam Young

May 30, 1967 - June 19, 2025

Sam Young was a passionate, caring and talented nurse. At the time of her death she was the Interim Chief Nurse at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, near Oswestry. Sam had extensive senior level experience within primary, secondary and community health care in Scotland, England and the Military. She had served for more than 16 years with the Armed Forces, and was still serving as a Senior Officer in the British Army Reserve; where she was Infection Prevention and Control Lead for 202 (M) Multi-Role Medical Regiment. Starting her career in her native Scotland, she moved to Shropshire in November 2018. Sam worked for Shropshire Clinical Commissioning Group, before taking up a role in Primary Care at Severn Fields Medical Practice in Shrewsbury. She then went on to work for Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust before taking up her last post at RJAH. Sam was held in extremely high regard thanks to her excellent clinical knowledge, her absolute dedication to patient care, but most notably the quality of her character. She was a kind, fun and compassionate person. She will be missed enormously.

Sam, This past week has been filled with me sharing your stories....your amazing stories....with so many people who loved you, mostly through talking, not writing. I love that now we finally have a digital space where we can keep sharing the incredible person you were and how you still live on in so many hearts. For me, it’s all about the values you embodied. You had this rare gift of blending love with leadership, a combination I’ve never seen before. You set a whole new bar for what leadership means. Honestly, “Leading with Love” should be its own initiative, because that’s exactly what you did. Everyone I’ve spoken to this week has said the same thing, you saw us as people, not just tools, and your leadership was always personal and tailored. I still wonder how you managed to be so much to so many, did you have some kind of supernatural ability to multiply yourself? Probably! Because nothing ever seemed beyond you. As for memories… there are so many I wouldn’t know where to begin. But the one thing that runs through all of them is your kindness and compassion. You had this incredible way of calming the waters, whether with wisdom, encouragement, or your brilliant sense of humour. Your loss has left a huge hole, not just in our organisation but in our hearts. But I know I will never forget, or waste, the investment you made in me, how you allowed me to grow in ways no one else ever did. Because of you, I have the skills and resilience to move forward and conquer whatever life and career throw at me. And I know I’m not the only one who’s been gifted that. Thank you, Sam. For everything. You’ll always be part of us. Hales xxx
