It almost goes without saying that Tony was a fantastically supportive and inspiring academic colleague. The lovely photo at the top of this page will always remind us of something rather more - his stellar human qualities. He was always around for the people who knew him, generous to a fault and concerned to see his friends and colleagues happy and successful. He took delight in all our personal milestones, whether it was the release of a book or the birth of a child. And he was a massive comfort in life's more difficult moments. I always looked forward to our conversations at King's in his later years, just as I loved my time at SOAS when I spent so many hours talking not just to him but also his beloved long-term partner, Mary. My thoughts are very much with her now. Thanks for everything, Tony
