I read Finian's tribute to Chris in Cham@Cam yesterday and was shocked to read of the death of a chemist who will be remembered not only for his science but for his teaching and his warm smile. I join in sending condolences to his family.
I suspect that Chris did his PhD research in lab 122 at the same bench as I vacated in 1977 but I only really became aware of him in 1992, when I was a member of the inter-site panel within ICI that awarded him their prize for organic chemistry at a time he was already making his mark doing independent and imaginative research. We need more individuals like him.
