I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Chris’s unexpected and untimely death, and I extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to Katherine and Daniel.
I first met Chris late in 1975 when we attended interviews for Natural Sciences at St John’s College. Although I was never a chemist, Chris and I became friends during our years as undergraduate and graduate students. Our friendship has endured ever since and I have many memories of pleasant evenings with Chris tasting wine, drinking beer, and occasionally playing tennis (but only on grass courts), snooker, and squash. There are also happy memories of times spent with Chris and Katherine as our children grew up; Chris was godfather to my daughter Julia, something which I know she values.
I always enjoyed spending time with Chris. I will treasure memories of many shared meals with Chris, Katherine, and Daniel. I was always impressed by Chris’s passion and desire to make a difference in everything he was involved with. Chris sparkled and I feel as if a light has been taken from the world.
I am proud to count Chris as a friend. My family and I will miss him greatly.
