The first record I have of Peter is in a list of guests at a party I gave at my house on 17 February 1991. I can’t now recall how I met Peter but I suspect that I was probably introduced to him some years earlier by our mutual friend Robin Voelcker.
From that time forward we saw a reasonable amount of each other in the local social scene, albeit not in the context of bridge of which Peter was an accomplished player.
Country walking has always been an interest of mine stretching back to the 1980’s, particularly in the Chiltern Hills area which has a wonderful network of walks and some very agreeable pubs. From the early 1990’s I transferred my walking area to Hampshire and it was during the period 1993/96 that Peter became a regular member of my very informal walking group. I also recall going on a marvellous walk with Peter in Brittany when we were staying with the late Hilary Mallinson. Peter had a very good command of French which was a boon as far as I was concerned!
Towards the end of this period walks were not so easy to arrange because people were by then married or otherwise involved in on-going relationships of one kind or another. The last recorded walk which included Peter was based around Cheriton on 21 May 2014.
When Peter entertained he did so generously and in some style. Soon after we had met I remember a barn dance to which he took a group of friends and later there was a summer party at his club in Putney overlooking the river, another at Bradford on Avon at the house of friends of his and, more recently, a paella party at his flat. Peter was always the perfect host at these events, making all his guest feel completely at ease.
Peter had a serious stroke in early 2015 which necessitated him being looked after by a dedicated team of carers for the next seven years until his death in June this year. This period must have been extremely difficult for Peter but he bore it with great courage and fortitude buoyed up by visits from his family and friends.
