Although I only met SubinayDa in January 2020, working as his junior partner for the UNDP Bangladesh CPD formulation, I was pleasantly astonished to see his humility, his down-to-earth attitude and how he could so easily interact with all, be it one of the highest ranking officials in the country or with a former staff, someone he helped in establishing the UN canteen. I could see how well respected and loved he is, based on the interactions over the few weeks of the mission. He was a former UN Director, but I have met few as humble as SubinayDa!
I came to know from him the tragedy of his losing his elder son during the mission. He shared how his surviving son was planning to go to college, within the state but not too far from home, and how he was thinking of changing his abode from a house to an apartment.
I cannot begin to express how heart-broken I am at SubinayDa's passing away.
Perhaps I was not practical in hoping for a miracle in July after he suffered the first of his strokes, hoping against hope that he would make it despite the odds. SubinayDa is a fighter, I would tell myself.
Alas, the hopes came to an end on November 7...
The loss to his family, to the development community, to Bangladesh, the UN and to the world is an irreplaceable one.
I offer my sincere & heartfelt condolences to ChhandaDi and Rayan.
Rest in peace, SubinayDa!
We will all miss you more than you know...
