Our dearest Robbie passed away quietly at Kingston General Hospital at the age of 74 after a valiant battle with cancer for 15 years. Predeceased (22 September 2023) by his beloved wife Cristina Breza, he is greatly missed by his sister Maureen McCallum Garvie (George Lovell); brother David William McCallum (Valerie Soper); son John William (Jay) (Ashley Storring); daughters Misia Ruby (Chad Cawlishaw) and Lilyanne Maria (Vincent Hebbe); grandchildren Everett Robert Chesley, Theodore Cecil, Jack Donald, and Adelaide Cristina; and dogs Arthur and Albert. After years in the Canadian Arctic working for First Air, Robbie managed the photo lab at Camera Kingston for 44 years. He was a lifetime member of the Cartwright Point gang, the Carr family cousins, and the amazing Birches community at Arden. Robbie had a great gift for friendship and approached the world with insatiable curiosity. He was a marvellous cook, photographer, gardener, fisherman, storyteller, and voracious reader, and much more. He was an original.

ARDEN MEMORIES OF ROBBIE Christine Poulter For those in the Arden family who are too young to know, I was that chicken-shit cousin, who didn’t jump off the bluffs and only timidly participated in whatever adventure was going. I hung out with Linda and Sandy who were very kind to me, but certainly had a greater capacity for risk taking. Then there were the little boys – Robbie, John, Greig and Bruce Brown. They were always up for an adventure, and the more danger involved the better, and even better yet if it involved a certain amount of mischief. I will leave the telling of those tales to them. When I think of Robbie, I think of his warm, sparkling blue eyes and his calm demeanour. I can honestly say that I have no memory of him rushing anywhere although I’m sure there must have been times. He just seemed to move comfortably through this world and he always seemed very grounded and at home in himself. He seemed to represent much of what has been good about our Birches community. He loved the land and the lake. When I think about him, it is usually Robbie in a little boat, probably without a motor, just floating peacefully down the lake, rod in hand – sometimes with a cousin in tow, sometimes on his own, just soaking up the beauty of this place. I also picture him wandering back and forth to John’s cottage with some new culinary delight or working away on one of his many eccentric woodworking projects. More than most of us, Robbie, John, and Greig seemed to carry on the traditions of past Generations – hiking, fishing, and exploring the land. While many of the rest of us were happy to hang out at the Birches, playing and swimming, they were off on their adventures as soon as they were old enough and were allowed. I’m not sure if past generations had quite as many near catastrophic adventures, but the boys have always had fun and survived them all with only a few injuries here and there. The other thing I want to say about Robbie and the boys is obvious: that they have had a very special and deep connection. In a time when male friendships seem to be harder to make and keep, they represent strong, forever connections which are beautiful but rare. The family, the land, and the traditions contributed to that, but it seems that they also notched that up in their own special ways. They have also provided role models for subsequent generations of how important male relationships are and perhaps of how mischief and adventure can help reinforce those connections. I always felt that Robbie had a gentle manner but also a quiet strength. His and Cristina’s battles with cancer were an indication of that strength and perseverance. We all know that cancer is not a generous foe, but they fought long, hard, and heroically. They seemed to maintain a calm in the midst of the battle. I think it is a great comfort to us all that Robbie was able to spend so much of his final days at Arden, in the place he loved surrounded by the family he loved. My last memory of Robbie was chatting at the kids Olympics this summer. He was so thrilled to see his kids and grandkids participating and enjoying the fun. His eyes were sparkling and full of pride and love. That is the picture I will keep in my mind.

My Dad had a big love for Octopus in his later years. He enjoyed learning about them and sharing stories about them. His grandson, Everett loved seeing him wear his Octopus attire so they could match.
