Australian jazz, blues, r&b & soul icon Renée Geyer, the singer with an active six-decade career - best known for songs such as ‘It’s A Man’s Man’s World’, ‘Say I Love You’ and ‘Heading in the right direction’ - passed away peacefully among family and friends on January 17 after complications following hip surgery at age 69.
In a tribute on Twitter, Australian singer and TV personality Marcia Hines described Geyer as “A game changer. A soul diva. My sister in song. We have just lost a person who possessed one of the greatest voices I have ever heard.”
The American blues singer guitarist Bonnie Raitt, who worked with Geyer in the US said ‘Australia’s incomparable Renee Geyer was one of the greatest singers I’ve ever known”
Colin Hay (formerly of Men At Work) said Renée holds a unique place in Australian musical history. “What a woman, what a singer! If beauty has a sound it is the voice of Renee. The US had Aretha, the UK Dusty Springfield. We had Renée! he said.
