It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing on of Professor Norbert Opiyo Akech, which occurred on the 16th of February, 2022 in Ahmedabad, India.
Prof. Opiyo Akech was born on 8th April 1954, to Mama Gaudensia Akech and the late Francis Aketch. He was the first born of 15 children.
Loving husband to Pamela Opiyo; father to Francis, Jean, Michael, Allan and Alex Opiyo. Son in law to the late Hanningtone and Sabina Osano.
He was a distinguished Geologist, a remarkable family man and a loyal friend to many. He was a long serving professor at the UON and was recognised as one of the transformational deans of the Faculty of Science. At the time of his death, he was heading the department of Physics and Earth Sciences at TUK and was also a board member of KIWASCO. He was a gold member of the Geological Society of Kenya, Geological Society of Africa, and Kenya National Academy of Sciences, an integral member of CTBTO, among other international accolades.
We mourn the passing of a great man who left behind a powerful legacy of humility, humour, unity and simplicity!.
