The most amazing grandma I could ever have had. She was warm and comforting, never short on words. She made friends everywhere she went, talked to everyone, especially if they had a baby. She loved babies! She was skilled in many things, to include sewing and crochet. She always saw the good in people. She had an awesome career with the FBI in Oklahoma before she retired. She put in countless hours and days after the bombing of the Murrah Building in Oklahoma City, April 19, 1995. She never forgot the people she spoke with that lost loved ones in the building. She always wondered how they were. That was her, though, always concerned for everyone else. She truly loved her family unconditionally and would do anything for them. There will never be enough space to say everything about her life. There will never be another person like her. Everyone had their own special relationship with her.
We could talk to each other about anything. Her regrets in life (she didn’t have many), secrets (she had a few!), life, and death. It wasn’t until her death that I found out she did not talk about death and what she wanted with anyone else. It was just another example of her looking out for her family, to me, not wanting to upset anyone or see them sad.
She decided she wanted to be a tree. We were on the phone discussing the news and the topic of environmentally friendly cremations/burials came up. She asked questions about it while I looked up the answers on the other end of the phone. That was it, she was going to be a tree. Even that decision was selfless. She liked that if she was a tree, she could still provide. Shade on a hot day, a sturdy base to lean on when you’re exhausted, and oxygen to keep people going. There really has never been and never will be another like her.
