Nermin was a kind and passionate young woman who was in her final year of medical school. She was an advocate for better access to surgical care worldwide and founded an NGO for that purpose. She did her best to represent Egypt in Global Surgery Research and published several articles. She was a colleague one could rely on and trust. We met and worked together during several years within InciSioN. Even though I never had the priviledge to meet her in real life, we were friends! She always remembered my birthdays and sent me Eid wishes. We had frequent chats and I always loved when her name popped up in my notifications. If I had a project in which I could involve her, I always reached out to her so we can work together some more. She helped me significantly when I needed help on my way to Oxford and she did it without expecting anything in return. That is the kind of person she was.
I will miss her! We had so much in commun, a similar culture, the same faith, the same passion and curiosity for research and a will to help our countries somehow. We also shared the loss of a parent as her mother died a few months after my father did. We supported each other through that as well. We fantasised about the day we would actually meet in real life and I am so sad that this dream will never come true.
This online rememberance page is my little contribution to try and bring some comfort to her family. They probably don't know how important Nermin's role in Global Surgery was, how loved and respected she was in our community and the impact she had all over the world. I want them to know this part of her as well and therefore I would like to invite you to write about what you have shared with her and what you remember about her. I will then send this to her family.
Thanks a lot
