Bruce Pollock dedicated his entire life’s work to serving students as an educator. During his 40-year career, half of which he spent at Crystal Springs Uplands School, Bruce was so much more than a teacher, administrator, mentor, coach, advisor, and colleague. He was a “school person” through and through. Wholly devoted to his teaching colleagues and students, Bruce deeply understood the responsibility of educating the next generation of young minds. In his own words, Bruce reflected, “colleagues and students … provided constant laughter over the years. I chose the perfect career for my personality.” Thank goodness he did, as his impact on all our lives is immeasurable. Bruce Pollock began his first tenure at Crystal from 1989 to 1998 and his second tenure from 2013 to 2023. In 2023, Bruce retired from Crystal as Chief Operating Officer (COO), but he had many roles before then such as Middle School History Teacher, Upper School Advisor, Soccer Coach, Director of Student Programs, Director of the Annual Fund, Acting Head of Upper School (twice!) and COVID Coordinator (aka “the Chief Spit Officer” who was responsible for collecting 700 vials of saliva every week and transporting them to the East Bay to be tested for COVID to ensure that the Crystal community stayed safe and that our school stayed open.) Quite simply, Bruce was known as “Mr. Crystal”. He cared about everything and everyone school-related. He would arrive at Crystal before the sun rose and be there until well after it set, always showing up and stepping up for the Crystal community. Bruce commented that his retirement was like attending his own memorial because of all the nice things said about him. This week, Bruce shared, “Now I have had a year of people reaching out with their overly generous memories that have warmed my heart. Thanks for embellishing those memories.” We hope this memory page can allow more people to share their memories of Bruce more broadly.

Bruce was undoubtedly one of mine & my children's favorite people at Crystal. Bruce was always smiling, warm, welcoming and always had a positive or humorous outlook on the goings on at school. He was the part of Crystal that reminded everyone to keep it light and fun, not to let things get too intense and was a friend to all. He was always poking fun at himself and was one of the main reasons myself & my kids loved Crystal's community so much. Bruce had so many different responsibilities at Crystal I couldn't keep track what his exact role was but he was always at everything! He worked tirelessly at Crystal. I remember one year Bruce giving me a few extra Crystal wine glasses at one of the food & wine festival events and said it was because I DID so much at Crystal! That made me very proud to know that the person I looked up to at Crystal & who did so much for the school wanted to reach out & thank me. My son Bennett was lucky enough to spend 7 years around Bruce and I remember many times Bruce calling Bennett's name (while trying not to laugh )through a bullhorn at pick-up time that "his mom was waiting for him in the parking lot..get your after school cookie & let's go Bennett!!". And of course I love that he used to call my daughter Brooke "his bestie". Both of them always making time to check in with their "bestie" at school. I snapped the picture attached above of the two of them at her middle school graduation just 3 years ago. I kept in touch w/ Bruce after he retired & while he was undergoing treatment over the past year & a half. I knew he faced a tough battle but he kept a positive attitude and appreciated not only me, but all the other people in his life that made time to check in on him. I will cherish our recent correspondence before he left this earth and will miss seeing & talking with him so very, very much.so much.

Mr. Pollock was my favorite teacher in 8th grade. He had a great sense of humor, and he taught us so much, especially about geography! We stayed in touch, and when he got engaged, he asked if I would be willing to sing at his wedding! I also wrangled a couple friends from my orchestra to play in a trio beforehand (2 flutes and a cello). I remember being so excited to participate in such a important event, and I remember the whole day so fondly. He was a great teacher and a wonderful person!

I was fortunate to know Mr Pollack at two very important times in my life. In his first year at Crystal, Mr Pollock taught my 11th grade history class. He taught us a technique to organize our notes for research papers, an invaluable skill I used throughout college and grad school. I also, clearly, remember the JOY I felt when he let me swear in the paper I wrote about Alcatraz. Until the paper was graded, I was convinced he might reject it - but no, he honored my voice. How liberating this was for a teenager who had lived with so many rules! In 2020, I returned to Crystal to drop off my oldest daughter for 9th grade. Honestly, I am not sure she would have had a 'normal' freshman year if it was not for his heroic efforts to keep kids in school during the pandemic. As a new Crystal parent in 2020, I never got out of the car on campus - so for months, my whole Crystal experience was Mr Pollock waving at me in his safety vest. I am so grateful that he was part of our Crystal family.

Mr. Pollock was such a constant during my seven years at Crystal. He was always smiling, always greeting students with enthusiasm, and always encouraging us to make the most of our days in middle school and high school, an important reminder for us all. I remember one of my favorite days in middle school was when he subbed in for our 7th grade history class and led us in a charades activity. He wore many hats at Crystal, and in all of them he made sure students felt seen, heard, and valued in the community. He was always willing to go above and beyond to help - he helped me and my friends set up and get parking in place when we hosted an event, and he made sure we had space to host a Tye Dye Day for fun. Most of all, his smile and positive energy was always uplifting: no matter what anyone was going through, he managed to brighten our days. He was so core to my Crystal experience and so many others. His place in the community was and is invaluable. Sending so much love to his loved ones during this time.

Mr. Pollock was the first person I met during the new student orientation at Crystal. His infectious personality made me feel right at home. He'd always smile and strike up a conversation if he saw me walking between classes, and as my advisor, he was there whenever I needed advice or someone to talk to. I always thought we had a special relationship, and the more I got to know him, I saw that this was true with everyone at Crystal. Despite never taking a class with him, just getting to talk to him made high school more enjoyable. He'll be deeply missed.

We will never forget Bruce. I remember the first time my husband Ken and I met Bruce at a school social event shortly after we became part of the Crystal community. Bruce was the Head of Transportation at that time. It was an interesting role, and I remember listening to him describe what he was responsible for in complete awe, and thinking "OK, lucky we are indeed, this community seems awesome". And then, little did I know that he would become the engine that kept Crystal going during Covid. His level of organization and attention to detail never ceased to amaze me. The job wasn't done if it wasn't perfect. During the otherwise not exactly exciting drop-off times in the mornings, I would always enjoy seeing Bruce direct the traffic and say hi to folks, again, with the laser-focused aim of keeping those cars going! And, one day, when we had to fetch our son's bike after hours when the gates were closed, I called, of course, who else but Bruce, asking him if he could please do me the favor of opening the gates, which he did, with a smile over the phone. Bruce will continue to live on in our minds forever. His smile, resilience, no-nonsense attitude, and, in one word, caring, will never be forgotten. May he serve as an inspiration to all around us.

Bruce Pollock - a man like no other. Bruce was a true original. He was one of those rare people who could make one feel better just by being around him. His passing leaves a void in the Crystal community that can never be filled. He was a true force of nature who embodied the intrinsic spirit of Crystal in everything that he was and did. Our very first encounter was via email in May of 2020, when as a newly accepted middle school family to Crystal, I received an instruction email from him regarding picking up summer reading materials. The first thing that struck me was his name - Pollock is a surname of a very famous South African cricketing family which has produced many heroic cricket players in South Africa. While he probably had no affiliation to them, I couldn’t help having a mental image of him dressed in all white cricket gear with a red cricket ball in hand! His note was so thorough, clear and organized that I couldn’t help but be impressed with the professionalism that it imbued. That note set the tone for what always comes to mind when I think of him - clear, thorough and organized. I could swear that he dreamt of schedules and email templates, for the need for order and clarity seemed to ooze out of every pore of his being! As the COVID summer progressed and when we were certain there was no hope of an in-person start to the Class of 2027, his weekly COVID test reminders became a ritual - I would often set my clocks for when he would send out those reminders - PST (Pollock Standard Time), again a model of efficiency and timeliness. Sometimes, when technology was being difficult and I couldn’t get the COVID test photos to cooperate with uploading, I would reach out to him and his calm soothing “it’s ok - I got it” was so comforting. I am still amazed by his dedication for spending every single weekend crisscrossing the Bay Area ferrying tween and teen spit. It takes a special person who was so invested in the students to do this and I cannot think of anyone else I have met till date who could have pulled this off except him. Of the many dozens of roles he performed at Crystal, perhaps the most visible was “traffic tzar”. I fondly remember the ruthless enforcement of pick up line etiquette that he was so good at! Woe betide the distracted parent/guardian (a.k.a. me) not pulling forward in the line which would elicit an animated wave of his hands that would immediately bring order to chaos. Amidst all this jest, I always admired his strength, courage, and positive outlook on life. His physical tirelessness manifested from his deep commitment and love for all things Crystal. Even in the face of the most difficult trial of his life, he continued to embody the selflessness and dedication that is quintessentially Bruce Pollock. While words always fall short of describing human emotions and experiences, I only hope these words give Bruce’s family and loved ones a glimpse of how much he was loved, respected and honored by myself, Meena, Aanya and every member of the Crystal community. Thank you Bruce Pollock and may you rest in peace.

When I was a new student, Mr. Pollock enthusiastically greeting me by name when I arrived at the Upper School was one of the first things that made me feel like I truly belonged at Crystal. I'll always be incredibly grateful to him for his enthusiasm and care.
