I first met Michel about 20 years ago in the offices of McCann in central London. That day he was on the other side of the table, as representative of Microsoft, and we were pitching our services to him as our client. He asked a string of very searching questions about processes and quality, and I thought straightaway this guy knows his stuff and is a real expert in the cutting-edge localisation of the day. We didn’t win that Microsoft work, so clearly we hadn’t met Michel’s expectations. Given that initial meeting, I was absolutely delighted when I learned that Michel had joined us and we were now on the same side. I worked with him on a few projects and again was deeply impressed by his knowledge and vision, his coolness with customers and his warmth to his colleagues. Gradually our paths in the company took different directions, but happily we got to meet again in person in Ireland a few years ago, when I visited our office in Bray. The meeting didn’t directly involve Michel, but he generously insisted on hosting us all for a great night out in Dalkey. It was pleasurable as always to be in his company, and he was typically entertaining and inclusive. I’m so sad to hear of Michel’s passing, and I send my deepest condolences to all his family, friends and colleagues. Although I hadn’t worked with him directly for quite a while, he still popped up in my thoughts, and I know I’ll continue to recall with great fondness my memories of Michel.
