Marlon was a simple man, who enjoyed life in simple ways. He is the son of Oscar and Benita Fernandes, who he loved so much and he was their pride and joy from the day he was born. The night mom went into labour there was a snow storm, and dad had to drive an hour to get to the hospital. He said he was praying all the way there, not just because of the storm, but because the car was almost out of gas. Of course he didnt let mom know that. They made it and got mom settled in and finally 2 days later, on February 5th, 1963, Marlon was born. When they brought Marlon home, they had a basinet for him to sleep in but soon he would need a crib. Dad was working at Whites Hardware making 1.25 an hour. Not much with a wife and new baby. Dad priced the cribs and it would cost 30 dollars, he had a lot of saving to do. At work the guys use to bet on the horses. They stopped asking dad to put money in because he would always tell them no. He was the only married guy there. But after Marlon was born one of his friends came to him and said come on Oscar put some money in, play a bet. So dad said ok and gave 25 cents. Later that day his friend came to him and said, you lucky son of a gun, you won the pot...30 dollars. Guess who got a new crib. Dad said no one ever said anything and he never asked but he doesnt think he won, he thinks the guys put money together and gave him the 30 dollars. They knew he needed a crib for her son. Growing up Marlon played hockey and soccer, and he was in Judo. He played the alt sax in high school, and loved to bang around on his bongos at home lol. As a kid he loved playing darts in the basement and always wanted me to play because he knew i would lose lol. Marlon had a lot of friends growing up, he was well liked. His first little friend was Kerry. His parents and our parents became life time friends also. Kerry and Marlon were always together when they were little, and making trouble together too. Marlon had a lot of friends growing up but his best friends starting in his young teenage years were Gabe, Brian and Paul. Them four I am sure have many stories that none of us knew about lol. In his 20s he took up photography as a hobby. He really enjoyed it and was good at it.
