Maria Josephina Da Silva (Ritin as she was fondly known) is iconically recognised as a Goan cuisine Masterchef by Goans in all quarters of the world. Mai worked very hard to raise eleven children, however, she always made the time to help family and friends.
Our beautiful Mai, Maria Josephina Da Silva, was daughter to Felipe and Rosa Barreto and beloved wife of the late, Rosario Da Silva. She was blessed with four sons, seven daughters, eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Mai was the last of her generation in the Barreto family.
On emigrating to London, Mai finally had time for hobbies. Her garden was always full of the brightest blooms, tender vegetables and sweet fruits. Mai was Chelsea’s biggest fan and champagne was always on ice when they won. She also followed tennis and snooker very keenly.
Messages received from well-wishers in the last few days remind us that Mai was a simple, deeply loving, beautiful, hardworking, caring, considerate, humble yet inspirational woman.
Mai was a devout Catholic and always had a rosary at hand. She had absolute faith in especially St. Francis Xavier, Our Lady of Lourdes and St. Anthony. She led the annual pilgrimage to Lourdes with family and close friends and always returned with greater strength, joy and a huge zest for life. Throughout the lockdown, our daily family rosary was Mai’s highlight of the day. She was received by the Lord with her rosary around her neck and comforted by her favorite Our Lady of Lourdes blanket.
Thank you for your prayers and support during our time of loss. It has meant so much to our family.
May Mai’s soul rest in peace.
