Mr Maika Ranamalo Bovoro was born on May 11 1932 and entered into heaven on August 27 2021 at the age of 89. Hailing from Matailobau, Naitasiri , he had maternal links to Navukailagi, Gau.
He was a man who dedicated his life to serving the Lord Jesus Christ. He was husband to Anaseini Bovoro and father of Tukana, Yaca, Mo, Miti and Buka. He was grandfather to 23 grandchildren and great-grandfather to 11 great-grandchildren.
He served his country as a soldier, a public servant and as a man of God. He served his region and the world as the first General Secretary of the Bible Society of the South Pacific where he was instrumental in the translation of the new Fijian version of the Bible and also various translations of the Bible across the Pacific. He also established the World Vision in the Pacific and headed the Bimbadeen Bible College in Australia. Later, he established the South Pacific Missionary Training Center outside Suva where he was instrumental in the training of missionaries and pastors, across all denominations of the Church. His students have gone on to become pastors, church workers and missionaries in Fiji, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and across the Pacific.
He attended two Presidential Prayer Breakfasts in the US at the invitation of President Ronald Reagan and was the General Secretary for the Pacific Island Leaders Fellowship with Sir Peter Kenilorea as its first Chairman and had the likes of Ratu Mara, Father Walter Lini and Mr George A Sokomanu.
He was not only a father to our family, he was a spiritual father to many, in Fiji, in the Pacific, and indeed across the world - as he crossed paths with so many people. This is why he was known affectionately as Tamaqu or Uncle Maika.
He was an elder of the Raiwai Gospel Chapel (Brethren Assemblies). He worked with all who loved the Lord irrespective of creed, gender or race. In doing so, he touched the lives of many with a taste of the Christ like love which he imbued and lived throughout his life.
He is now in heaven with his Lord and Saviour and reunited with the saints.
It is a journey we all shall take and let us all reflect on his life and his love for Jesus and celebrate as one the legacy that he leaves behind.
We the Bovoro family, and all who called him Tamaqu or Uncle Maika - will miss our father, grandfather and great-grandfather and invite you all to join us in celebrating his life!
