I met Kye when we were both in middle school. As a teenager, Kye always seemed wiser and more mature than my friends and me. He was like my cooler, older brother. Kye introduced me to Reservoir Dogs, the Usual Suspects and Pulp Fiction when we were 15 (I think I mostly watched Disney movies before then). I’m a huge movies fan now…....and it all started because of Kye.
Kye and I both loved movies, music and sports. Those common interests were one foundation of our friendship…….but the more important foundation was that Kye was always there for me. Kye was devoted to his friends, his parents and his family.
Kye was very nice, polite and sweet. One of our mutual friends couldn’t recall getting mad at Kye even once during the 10 years that he knew Kye!
Kye was funny and fun. Every time that we hung out, we would end up laughing to the point of tears usually more than once. And whenever Kye or I wanted to check out a new concert, we both knew that the other person was game to join.
Kye was also very genuine and 100% himself. He couldn’t have pretended to be someone else if he tried. Kye never ceased to surprise and amaze me: the way that he dove into playing the drums, always taking forever to reply to my text messages, his ability to always find a job, etc…..
I was always struck by Kye’s fearlessness. Some examples of this: Katimavik, his exchange in Scotland and England......and the way that Kye made new friends so easily. I would have been hesitant about doing any of those things…...but Kye was braver than me and he didn’t think twice.
These are rare qualities…...and Kye was a unique, special person. I wasn’t sure what he was going to do…….but I knew that he would give it his all and that he would achieve great things. It’s cruel and tragic that we won’t get to see that happen.
I’m grateful that I knew Kye. I miss him so much and I’m so sad that I won’t get to see him again. I won’t ever forget him. Rest in peace.
