Kalyan Sunderam, (71), for forty-six years the beloved husband of Rohini (nee Singha), loving and adored father of Nirvan and Nayana (Jordan) passed away peacefully on June, 20th, 2021 in Juffair, Kingdom of Bahrain. The youngest in a family of four brothers, he was predeceased by his brother Swaminathan (Sam/ Bangalore) and survived by his older brothers, Kumar Subramaniam (Toronto, Canada) and Bala Subramaniam (Tamil Nadu, India).
A Christian cremation ceremony was held on the 24th of June, 2021 followed by a funeral service at 6pm on Saturday 26th June, 2021 at St. Christopher’s Cathedral, Bahrain.
Kalyan was a banker and finance professional for more than forty years, a risk specialist who was highly respected in his field. After a successful career working for various banks in India (HSBC) and Bahrain (BBK), Kalyan joined public service at the Province of Nova Scotia's Department of Finance where he was a proud civil servant working on various alternative financing strategies that ultimately benefitted all Nova Scotians. In semi-retirement Kalyan actively represented the CFA Society and, as a volunteer of PRMIA (Professional Risk Managers International Association), he was a dedicated member of their education committee.
A close colleague said, “If someone were to ask me to describe Kalyan in just one word, I would say, ‘integrity’. I believe that this was the foundation of his dealings with everyone.” A sentiment further endorsed by both his children, who were at the receiving end of his strict adherence to ‘doing what was right’.
He was a keen sportsman and represented his college, St Joseph’s, Trichy, played Five-a-Side hockey for HSBC (erstwhile Mercantile Bank) in Calcutta, India. He never passed up an opportunity to try his hand at something new and consequently ended up playing golf in New Delhi – a sport which he continued to enjoy in Calcutta, Canada and Bahrain until fairly recently, having once scored a hole-in-one at the Riffa Golf Course. He even learnt to canoe and ski (albeit not very well) in Halifax.
A committed Christian, Kalyan engaged in various aspects of the church community. He was a regular ‘reader’ at both St Peter’s Birch Cove, Halifax and St Christopher’s Cathedral in Bahrain.
From a young age he enjoyed acting and took part in school and college plays as well as in theatrical productions through the Bank in London (Guys & Dolls), Bombay (Alyque Padamsee’s long-running Jesus Christ Super Star, among others), several productions in New Delhi, India and Halifax, Nova Scotia. He enjoyed the arts in all its forms, whether presentation or performance, and was a dedicated supporter of Rohini’s ‘literary’ endeavours.
