Jenny Irene Miller, known by her Iñupiaq name Wiagañmiu, was born on March 14th, 1988 in Sitnasuaq (Nome, Alaska) and her family is from Kinigin (Wales). Jenny is the daughter of Charlotte Miller (Charlotte's partner is Jeff Newbauer) and is the sister of Andrew Jake Miller. Her great grandparents were Helen and Willie Senungetuk (her Ahka and Adada). Her grandparents were Cora Olson and her husband Larry Olson (Grammy and Grampy), and Emily and Hank Miller. Her aunties and uncles are Leah Warburton, Cynthia Williams, Laura Olson, Kathy and Wayne Horton, Eric Olson, Sharon Simko, Jeanie Taylor, Marsha Staggs, the late Johnny Miller, Teresa, Wayne Miller, and Tony Miller. Jenny's family is large, including many cousins who grew up together like siblings. Jenny's wife is Nora Gecan.

I find myself thinking of Jenny in the smallest moments, like when I was just ironing my clothes. It catches me off guard, how suddenly I’m in tears remembering her perfect steaming and ironing skills and listening to music, the care she put into everything she touched. It’s these quiet memories that bring me close to her again. I’ll carry Jenny with me, always. In something so small like the folds of a freshly pressed shirt, or in the intention behind a task well done. Jenny, you are missed. You are loved. You are remembered everyday.

This picture is from the last time I visited Anchorage in 2023 and the last time I got to hangout with Jenny. We had decided to go for a walk on the Coast trail, as we had done many times, after getting breakfast or brunch at Snow City Cafe —I can’t remember which. It was a cold day at the end of October. I remember feeling cold, despite thinking I had adequately layered my clothes. Yet I did not care because of the incredibly engaging conversation we were having. As we were walking and talking, she stopped me, and asked something like, “Can I take picture of us? I want to have a picture of us together to remember your visit.” Of course, I agreed. Jenny and I had a conversation earlier in the day about how we often got too caught up in the moment and forget to take pictures because we were too focused on the experiencing. This seemed funny to me since she was a photographer. She replied was that it was in the unplanned moments that she would forget. It don’t remember everything we talked about that days because we talked about a lot. We always tended to get lost in deep intimate conversations about anything and everything when we were together. That day was not exception. I always felt honored when she shared the more private aspects about herself, in turn making me feel comfortable sharing part of myself that few others knew. Despite having to leave with the first day or so of my visit, Jenny made a point to make time for me, making me feel so honored. Jenny and I’s friendship wasn’t one of those where we talked or interacted frequently, but we had an agreed feeling of closeness. I always look forward to the next time I would talk or get to see Jenny and/or Nora.

I was in Jenny's graduating class at UNM. We were a small cohort so we all got to know each other well in our years together there in Albuquerque. Jenny brought a calming and quietly joyful energy to every conversation that made it so easy to relax and be at ease around her. Whether it was grabbing pints at the local brewery or sitting around a campfire with a shared meal and lots of laughs, you always know that if Jenny's going to be there, it's going to be a sweet time that you'll look back on and smile. I wish I were there to celebrate the brilliant person they are. I'm hoping to get a group of us together back in Albuquerque, to honor Jenny and reminisce on all the ways they brought beauty and joy to us. Abrazos.
