It is with deepest sorrow that we inform you of the death of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Javier S. Guerrero on December 11, 2018. He touched many lives with his generous enthusiasm, joy, kindness and thoughtfulness, and he will be profoundly missed. He is survived by his wife, Carol, his four children, Andrea, Javier, Laura, and Regina, and his five grandchildren, Django, Kai, Chiara, Dylan, and Sullivan. **** Con gran dolor les informamos del fallecimiento de Javier S. Guerrero el pasado 11 de diciembre 2018. Javier se nos adelantó a los 73 años de edad y deja una huella de amor, alegría, y bondad en cada una de las personas que conoció y será extrañado profundamente. Le sobreviven su esposa, Carol, sus cuatro hijos, Andrea, Javier, Laura, y Regina, y sus cinco nietos, Django, Kai, Chiara, Dylan, y Súllivan.

If you had asked any of the long-time neighbors on La Mesa Court in Spring Valley who the heart of the neighborhood is, their answer would have been swift and easy—Javier Guerrero! Javier and his wonderful wife, Carol, moved to our neighborhood in the mid 70’s; and from the moment they took up residence, our cul-de-sac became friendlier and more cohesive. When the first Christmas rolled around, Javier came to our house across the street and said, “I think we should have a La Mesa Court Posada!” Tim and I agreed, even though we weren’t quite sure what a Posada was. One neighbor volunteered to write a “nativity scene” play, in which all the children would participate. Carol and Javier hosted a “piñata-making party” for the kids prior to the Posada. I had the kids over to our house to practice the play, and parents were busily creating costumes for their children. On the actual Posada date, we all gathered in the cul-de-sac; Javier and other musicians played Silent Night on their guitars as we walked around the luminarias singing. Once we arrived at the Guerrero’s home, Javier, Carol, and others re-enacted through song Joseph and Mary’s search for lodging. The children then did their play, after which they got to break their homemade piñatas. After a potluck at the Woods’ or Simm’s home, it was back to Javier and Carol’s home for dessert and music and singing. It was a wonderful event, which we repeated for 33 years under Javier’s direction. I felt it was quite fitting that Javier’s memorial was held on the very date that this year’s Posada was to occur. Of course, there were many other memories through the years—trips to Tijuana, hosting exchange students together, borrowing stuff from each other, and watching our children grow up and get married. I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to know Javier as a friend and neighbor, and I am so glad my children got to grow up in a neighborhood with the Guerrero family! Javier will be greatly missed but will forever be in our hearts. Marge and Tim Woods

Javier and Carol were like parents to me in San Diego. They were there for all my major accomplishments. This one was my medical school graduation at UCSD, in 2004.

Javier was a wonderful, wonderful man and I am so saddened to hear of his passing. Some of my best memories are the Guerrero thanksgivings sitting around the living room, singing and playing music together. Javier playing Beatles songs on the guitar, with Beston filling in for the guitar solos, and the rest of us clapping hands, singing and shaking our rattles. Or Javier and Carol sitting side by side, each playing their guitars while singing the sweetest duets. Those moments were magical, warm and full of soul and love-- those rare moments of total peace and completeness. Javier was a mentor and an important role model for me. He showed me that one could be strong and masculine, but at the same time warm, kind and loving. I will miss him dearly.

My first memory of Javier was in 1995 in Mission Beach. He brought Carne Assada to grill for the Capoeira crew. Being the resident BBQ expert, he was somehow invading my space, but the manner in which he carried himself made it a wonderful addition instead of an intrusion. Over time I got to know him and had the honor of sharing in family celebrations with the Guerreros. He was always kind and thoughtful with a great perspective. Before my oldest daughter was born, we were explaining to him how we were going to organize the room and our lives and such and telling him "how it was going to be", he smiled and without judgement or further clarification said, "Oh really." His laugh was infectious, his wisdom was endless. He was always there for those that needed him and this embrace was something I have always emulated. I will forever hold him high on my list as the perfect example of what it means to be a human. There is so much to say and yet for those who knew him his actions and his deeds have said it all.
