BIOGRAPHY
PROFESSOR GAIUS IGBOELI (IKENUA)
Gaius was born on January 27, 1939 to Madam Margaret Nwadiayiyọ nee Okoloafor Ama Okafor of Umudunu village, and Catechist James O. Igboeli of Enuọra Ọrọfia village, both in Abagana, Njikoka L.G.A. of Anambra State.
His names were Gaius Nwafor Chukwugekwu; but his immediate elder brother, Apollos called him Olisaeloka probably because he now had a brother he could play with having had first an elder brother and then three elder sisters. Gaius was the last born and he and Apollos were very close.
He lived with his elder sister, Late Mrs. Nelly Nwanza (aka MISS) and so attended primary school in the various places including Nnobi, and Amawbia, where she was a teacher. He loved sports and earned himself the nickname ‘ASAHEL’ because of how fast he ran. In September 1952 he entered the Government College, Umuahia and obtained the Cambridge School Certificate in1957 and the Higher School Certificate in 1959. He was in the school football team and scored a winning goal for his school team and so his picture was featured in the school magazine ‘THE UMUAHIAN’. Other games he played include: hockey, tennis, cricket and squash. He was captain of his football and hockey teams.
He attended the University College, Ibadan and received the COLLEGE SCHOLAR AWARD, 1960-1963. Gaius was distinct, and in 1963 became the first student to graduate with a 1ST CLASS B.Sc. (Agriculture) University of London. He received a scholarship -Rockefeller Foundation Fellow, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA, 1964-1968, and got his M.Sc. in 1965 and Ph.D. in 1968 in Animal Science.
In September 1968 he married Chiazọ Claribel Marchie (ABADAGU) whose parents were Victoria Nwudenkwọ (nee Ikediọnwu) and Mr. Matthew Mọfunanya Marchie of Umuezeọnyalagu –Ọkwasala Royal Family in Ọkpunọ Umuọta village, Obosi in Idemili North L.G.A. of Anambra State. Coincidentally they had the same Godfather, Mr. Ajumobi (a Principal at TTC, Ogbeugwu College, Obosi). God blessed them with four daughters, Nkem, Obiamaka, Amoge, Ijeoma, and a son, Elo. Gaius’ family comprises not just their children but includes nephews, nieces, and friends whom they welcomed into their home as their own and who accepted them as their parents.
Gaius loved to read and to think. He read books on politics, administration, business, finance, religion, etc. He read books recommended as good reads.
He always went to work early; he was a good timekeeper; ‘African time’ was not a part of his vocabulary.
He worked as a Senior Research Officer at the Agricultural Research Council, Mount Makulu, Chilanga, Zambia from 1968-1971; as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Zambia, Lusaka, Zambia from 1971-1974. In 1974 he became a Professor of Animal Science and Head of Department at the University of Zambia till 1976 when his professor and mentor, Prof. Modebe, Anthony Nwachukwu Amechi (from Obikporo, Onitsha), who had been following his academic prowess and progress recommended that he be employed as a professor and as the Head of Department of Animal Science, University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He thus joined the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) in 1976.
During the period 1976-2004, Gaius, held these administrative positions:
• Head of Department of Animal Science, UNN (1976-1979)
• Ag. Deputy Vice-Chancellor, UNN, and Chairman Board of Governors, University Primary School, UNN (1979-1980)
• Foundation Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Makurdi, Benue State (1980-1984)
• Pro-Chancellor, Anambra State University of Science and Technology (ASUTECH) (1989-1991)
In the course of his career, he was a member of the under-listed boards:
• Member, Board of directors, Orofia Industrial Estate Community Bank, Abagana, Njikoka L.G.A., Anambra State (2006-)
• Chairman, Governing Council, Anambra State University of Technology (1989-91)
• Member, Governing Council of St. Paul’s College, Awka (1995-)
• Chairman, Agrofessional Consultants (2003-)
• Member, Academic Board, National Animal Production Research Institute, NAPRI, Samaru, Zaria, Kaduna State (1977-79, 2003-2004)
• Member, Agricultural Research Council, ARC, Lusaka, Zambia (1971-74)
After his retirement in 2004, he went back to managing the poultry farm which he had established in 1977 at Eziani in Nsukka LGA; until he was invited alongside Sir Ngozi Anyakora, by the Council of knights, to write the proposal and law for a university –Paul University. He became the Chairman, Programme Implementation Committee (PIC), St. Paul’s University, Awka in 2006. He was thereafter made the Vice-Chancellor (2009-2014); Sir Ngozi Anyakora, the Registrar, to consolidate on the work they had already started there.
After he finally retired from active service he went back to Nsukka and took over the management of his poultry farm at Eziani.
Gaius related well with his kinsmen, and his neighbours. They lived in peace.
He loved, respected and took care of his wife. They were friends and did things together and in agreement; they travelled together a lot of the time. In 1994, Gaius and his wife joined in the annual Christian pilgrimage to Israel.
He had an excellent relationship with his in-laws from Obosi and took them as his own. He supported his wife re: her obligations at Obosi and was well known in and among her kin at Obosi.
He loved his children and looked out for them; he taught, advised and warned them so that they succeed in life. He took his wards and their families as a part of his family. He had a cordial relationship with his sons- and daughters-in-law and their families. His dear daughter-in-law was a delight to him, they were great friends and enjoyed many conversations and times together. He loved his grandchildren and had an attachment to the one whom he called ‘the baby’, having had the opportunity not only to baby-sit him but also of shaving off his baby hair.
There was such love between Gaius and his siblings that they looked out for one another and extended this love to those who were not family members. They had a special language which they spoke among themselves. Although they were no more, he encouraged and supported their children; some of whom, even though not cordial, he remained patient with them saying “they are my brother’s children.”
He enjoyed a cordial relationship with his cousins and their families; some of whom gave him the nickname ‘GAM-GAM ’. He encouraged and supported them when the need arose. He rejoiced with them when they rejoiced and mourned with them when they mourned. Having him around gave them a sense of security/level of confidence that all is well.
He loved young people and had interesting and enlightening discussions on varied issues and topics with those that came around him. A number of them took him as their mentor, adviser, and role model.
He had a compassionate heart. He encouraged people to get educated instead of just getting petty jobs for themselves, their spouses, children, or relations who had the capacity. He helped a number of students (both those he knew and those he did not know) to get admitted into different educational institutions; and a number of applicants to get jobs, all these without asking to be appreciated.
On the occasion of his 80th birthday, he advised that when one climbs the ladder of success others should also be allowed to climb that ladder; the ladder should not be pushed down because anyone among those climbing up after one may be one’s future helper.
When anyone was antagonistic toward him, he would consider the person’s words, actions, and attitude to know whether the issue should be responded to or be ignored. Few years ago, when he was summoned to answer an idol, he responded that “he was the son of a catechist and had no business with idols.” He did not honour the invitation.
As a little boy, he, his brother Apollos, their friends and their masquerade had an encounter with a bad masquerade that left their friends with rashes all over their bodies. Although he and his brother were not affected, to ‘protect’ them from having the rashes later, they were taken to a traditional herbalist, who cut some marks on their bodies and rubbed an ointment on the marks. Over the years, after the LORD had healed his children who had had skin allergies, he realized that as Christians, he and his brother were protected by God and that was why they did not get the rashes; that masquerading, watching masquerades and visiting medicine men who made incantations and all, added no value but rather exposed one to future untold hardship and suffering, both spiritually and physically. Therefore, he did not expose his children and grandchildren to masquerading and watching masquerade parades; rather he warned them against getting involved in them and in other heathen cultural activities.
He was an active and impactful member of the Abagana Welfare Union (AWU), Nsukka branch.
At the end of every year, he regularly travelled to Abagana for the Christmas and New Year celebrations, and for the annual harvest thanksgiving held at St. Peter’s (ANG.) church. He was the Chairman of the Church building committee; and interestingly, his father, late Catechist James Igboeli was the vice-chairman of the church’s first church building committee. He did not take the investiture of ‘knighthood’ nor ‘the honor’ given to fathers because he was of the opinion that in the times of the Christians of old these titles were non-existent.
It is said that ‘once a chorister, always a chorister’. While in primary school, Gaius was a member of the choir; his elder brother, Apollos was a choir master. He loved singing and playing the piano. Regularly, just before he left for work in the mornings, he would stop by the piano and play the hymn ‘To Christ the Prince of Peace’ (A&M 198, Tune: St. George). He joined a private choir at UNN, THE PYTHAGOREANS, founded by Prof. Elizabeth Eke and the organist, Mr. O. Ndu. After he retired, he joined the choir at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Nsukka, and took part in their activities: attending practices, singing during Sunday services, Diocesan conferences and participated in a Diocesan choir competition held in Enugu. Some of the choir anthems he enjoyed are ‘LORD, FOR THY TENDER MERCY’S SAKE’ by Richard Farrant and ‘EBE ỌBULA I NA-AGA UDO’ by Ikoli Harcourt Whyte. When Gaius fell ill, he was unhappy that he could not sing; so some of his favorite hymns/songs were played for him; the joy and peace could be seen radiate from him.
On January 31st, 2024, having completed his earthly task, Gaius returned to his maker, joining the heavenly choir to sing the praises of his LORD and Savior.
A Bible verse Gaius liked to quote:
“Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen”. (Jude 24-25 KJV)
