Fr. Joachim (Okechukwu) Cabanyes Trevino was born in Madrid on the 29th of November 1957. A chemist by profession, he was ordained as a priest of the Prelature of Opus Dei, a task to which he dedicated his entire energies. He was very calm, good humored and easy to get along with, personality traits that he diligently applied to his pastoral work with many people. Hundreds of priests, lay people of all walks of life had him as spiritual director, as advisor for their souls.
He came to Nigeria in 1988 and fully immersed himself in the culture.He has been Chaplain to a number of centres of Opus Dei including Greendale, Uhere, Hillpoint, Uzomiri, Ezindo and Ugwuoma. Fr. Joachim was very generous and always available to help. No task was too menial for him.
He died on the 16th of July, 2020 after a brief illness and will be sorely missed by us all and of course by his mother Pilar and his siblings Luis, Maria, Diego and Isabel.
