Solomon Imuetiyan Olaye was born on 17th April 1946 in Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria to Israel Olaye a police officer and Esther Olaye, a trader. He was the eldest of 11 children.
Solomon attended Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Ibadan and Ago-Iwoye Secondary school, Ogun. He went onto complete his A ‘levels at Hussey College, Warri in 1967. While in school, he participated in numerous sports activities in addition to achieving high grades in the subjects he took. He was an avid football player and also a member of a musical band.
In 1970 he obtained a scholarship to study Economics abroad at the world renowned Patrice Lumumba Friendship University, Moscow, where he became student union president in 1972 - 1973 and also in the same year met his wife Florence Olaye. He graduated with an MSc Economics in 1975 and returned back to Nigeria and helped pioneer the Bendel State liaison office where he worked for 2 years.
In 1978, He returned back to Russia and in 1982 obtained a PhD in Economics and Statistics from Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics (MESI).
He then joined the Nigerian civil service in 1982, working at Bureau of Statistics and retired as Acting Director, National Accounts Division in April 2006.
He followed the legacy of his father and when his father passed, became the patriarch of the family, a true icon. He was loved by all his family, friends and acquaintances. He was an amazing and inspirational person, and will be missed by his family and friends.
Solomon Olaye is survived by 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
