R. Danvers "Danny" Williams, the Jamaica College community mourns the loss of a cherished alumnus and philanthropist. Danny, as he was affectionately known, was a beacon of light during Jamaica College's darkest times, transforming the lives of students and teachers alike. Founder of the nation's first Jamaican-owned life insurance company, Life of Jamaica, now Sagicor Life Jamaica, he was a pioneer and a dedicated servant to his country. Danny's unwavering commitment to his alma mater was unparalleled. He generously donated his time and resources, raising millions of dollars for Jamaica College and created the Jamaica College Foundation. His impact was immeasurable, offering countless promising young men the opportunity to make a difference in the world. His accolades, including the National Honour of Commander of the Order of Distinction and the Order of Jamaica, were testament to his selfless dedication to community service. A man of profound humility, Danny graciously donated the proceeds from his biography to the Jamaica College Foundation R. Danny Williams Scholarship Endowment Fund, ensuring future generations would benefit from his legacy. His spirit, kindness, and generosity will forever echo through the halls of Jamaica College. Danny leaves behind a legacy of inspiration, reminding us all to give selflessly and make a difference in the lives of others.

It was the early days of the R. Danny Williams-led JC Renaissance Project, and I was living in Hong Kong. Late one night during the typhoon season, I received a call from a number I didn't recognize. I answered, and to my surprise, the voice on the other end was unmistakable—it was the commanding presence of R. Danny Williams. When Sir Danny calls, you can't help but sit up a little straighter and listen attentively. He greeted me with effusive warmth!" Hello, Lowell," he said. "How are things going? I see you're having some inclement weather over there in Hong Kong. Make sure to stay safe. And how is your lovely wife, Beverley - please give her my regards?" His thoughtfulness took me aback as this was my first one-on-one conversation with Sir Danny, who had clearly done his homework before dialing my number. "Thank you, Danny," I responded. "Beverley and I are doing well." "Good, good," he said. "As you know, the school is in bad shape. I'm personally calling as many Old Boys as I can to get the funds and resources to fix as many things as we can. The need is great and urgent." With a twinkle in his voice, he specified the amount he wanted from me, followed by a well-timed quip about my banking background and the value of exceeding targets. I chuckled, "Of course, Danny. I'll see what I can do." He followed up a couple of weeks later, and I had good news. Myself and a couple of other JCOBA-NY Old Boys would be contributing to the JC Renaissance Project. Danny was effusive in his thanks. "Lowell," he said, "you don't know what this means to the school and to me. You're a true Old JC Boy." That interaction spoke volumes about the man—his passion, determination, and ability to inspire action. It wasn't just about fixing buildings; it was about rallying a community to invest in the future of Jamaica College. Sir Danny was more than a leader; he was the heartbeat of our alma mater, a force that stirred us to action with his unwavering commitment and magnetic spirit. That was the measure and magnetism of the man. He had a way of making you feel like you were part of something bigger than yourself. He inspired you to give your best. I'll never forget that call from Sir Danny. It was a reminder of the importance of community, of giving back, and of making a difference. Sir Danny, we will miss you dearly.
