Donovan Thomas was born 11/10/1969 in Brooklyn, NY to Marion Thomas and Barbara Spencer. As a young man, Donovan was loved by many. He quickly acquired a reputation among friends, family, and those who knew him in the neighborhood as a loving protector. He didn’t like seeing anyone mistreated and was always ready to stand up for those who belonged to him, especially his little sister Cheryl, who was usually tracing not too far behind him. His noble qualities were even more evident as an adult. When he became a father during his first marriage in 1994, Donovan gained two little people, who would belong to him forever. His son Kristopher Mitchell Thomas and his daughter Anaizhje Monique Thomas, who have shared the huge role their Father played in shaping them to be the people they are today. Anyone who knew Donovan knows just how much he loved his Kris and Nani.
They also know how much he loved his mother, or “his heart” as he liked to call her.
He spent most of his life making sure that his children and his mother had what they needed.
In 2014, he added to his list of people who belonged to him when he met his wife Shannon Barber and step daughters Adriana and Mariana Maturino. He truly loved and felt loved by Shannon; and that was so clear when he spoke to others about her. And it was her love that surrounded him during a very difficult battle with cancer, until he passed on Friday, Oct 1. Our family is very grateful for the care that she provided when he needed support the most.
Most of those who knew Donovan, well knew that he led a quiet life. He didn't need or want a lot of attention; even during his trials.
He knew who loved him. No matter how long it had been since they spoke…. he knew the love was real. There was much to love about him, he was charismatic, and he loved to dress. All the children loved him, whether he was teaching the girls hand games or showing the boys how to be tough, he knew how to put a smile on their faces. He enjoyed making people laugh. In the same manner he, much like his mother had a low tolerance for things that didn’t make sense! They would often discuss just that when he would call and check on her weekly even throughout his illness.
He was proceeded in death by his Father Marion Thomas. Survived by His Wife Shannon Barber-Thomas. His Son Kristopher Thomas. Daughter Anaizhje Thomas. Step-Daughters A Adrianna and Mariana. His Mother Barbara Tuten, and Sisters, Cheryl Thomas, Katrina Briggs (Colby), Shameika Webb, Step-sister Olympia Tuten. His Grandson Kristopher Thomas Jr. His Aunts, Loretta McDonald, Eva McLeod (JC), Mary Hayes Uncles Jesse Spencer (Veronica) and Xavier Swindell and Clarence Jones along with a host of cousins and friends who he loved hard, as if they were his brothers, sisters, and his beloved nieces and nephew.
Over the last few year Donovan was working to restore a relationship he started early in life. He was alway mindful of his Heavenly Father Jehovah, but he recently took the time and made sincere efforts to draw closer and strengthen that relationship. This gave him peace during his battle with cancer. May all who remember him take the opportunity to get to know the God who can give us all peace , comfort and the opportunity to see Donovan again, Jehovah God.
