David Lewis Thorson, age 55, of Big Rapids, Michigan, passed away on October 25, 2025, in his hometown. He was born on November 29, 1969, in Big Rapids and was raised in Stanwood by his loving grandparents, Hank and Hilda Thorson. David graduated from Morley Stanwood High School in 1988 and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Marine Corps for nine years, including time during Desert Storm. His service reflected his strength, discipline, and unwavering commitment to protecting others.
After his military service, David continued to work hard and provide for his family. Over the years, he held several jobs, including his time at Wolverine Worldwide’s warehouse, where he was known for his strong work ethic and good-natured personality. No matter where he worked, David brought humor, dedication, and camaraderie to those around him.
In his later years, David decided to return to college to continue his education — a goal he was deeply proud of. Through hard work and determination, he earned his bachelor’s degree in teaching, focusing on history, a subject he was truly passionate about. His love for history reflected his appreciation for the past and the lessons it holds for the future.
David was the kind of man who could make anyone laugh. He had a natural gift for storytelling and a sense of humor that could light up any room. Whether it was a funny memory from his Marine days, a story from his time on the farm, or one of his countless adventures, David made sure everyone had a good laugh and left with a smile. He believed in finding joy in everyday life and spreading that joy to everyone around him.
Beyond his humor, David had a deep love for the simple, peaceful moments. He loved tending to his garden and took great pride in growing things with his own hands. His chickens, ducks, and dogs were his companions and his joy — he truly was a farmer at heart and in life. David’s home was always full of laughter, love, and the kind of warmth that made people feel welcome.
David is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Thorson; his children, Ashley Houghton and her husband Josh Houghton, Daniel Thorson, Patric Thorson, and Elizabeth Ferris and her husband Levi Ferris; and his cherished grandchildren, who brought him endless pride and happiness. He is also survived by his brothers Fred and George, and sisters Sandy and Brenda.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Hank and Hilda Thorson, who lovingly raised him, as well as his mother Rose and several of his siblings. While his passing leaves a deep ache in the hearts of those who loved him, there is peace in knowing he is now reunited with his mom, siblings, and all those he loved who passed before him.
David will be remembered for his laughter, his stories, his kindness, and his heart. He lived a life full of love and adventure, and his memory will continue to bring smiles to the faces of all who knew and loved him.
A celebration of life and memorial service for David will be announced at a later date.
“Those we love never truly leave us — their laughter, lessons, and love remain forever in our hearts. Semper Fi.”
