Christian Yunis joined the Crystal Springs Uplands School community in 2004, with a short stint in Massachusetts from 2016-2018 to be closer to family, before returning to his rightful place at Crystal in 2018. During his time at Crystal, Mr. Yunis taught the full range of math courses and levels, ultimately serving as US Math Department Chair. He was a dedicated advisor, Boys Basketball coach, and colleague who cared deeply about his students and subject matter while always going above and beyond. Mr. Yunis was an inspiration to all, living our core value of Seeking Growth Challenges whether performing as part of the annual Lip Sync competition, accompanying a student on piano for Crystal’s Got Talent, or pushing our scholar-athletes to the next level in the Fitness Center by demonstrating his own athletic prowess. He had a wonderful way of balancing professionalism with being a Crystal kid at heart, as evidenced by his fervor for sports, zest for spelling bees (he was a two-time champion at Crystal), knowledge of random movie quotes, love for all things Star Wars, and contagious excitement for a seriously challenging math problem. Perhaps the most important and enduring gift that Mr. Yunis has given to Crystal was introducing his wife, Ms. Shab Yunis, to our community. As many of you know, Ms. Yunis served as our Middle School Assistant from 2018-2023 and currently serves as our US Program Manager. In this way and many other ways, the Yunis family is inextricably and personally connected to our entire Crystal community, making this great loss even more pronounced.
