Carol Pace Guerrero passed away peacefully in her sleep early in the morning of October 22, 2024. She went content in the knowledge that she had lived a rich life full of love and learning. Her heart may have been weak, but it was nevertheless a generous and loving one and she will be missed by the many people who were privileged to know and love her.
She grew up in Cortez, Colorado with her sisters Shirley and Genie (deceased), where she learned to play the violin and to appreciate the beauty of nature. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts with high distinction from the University of Arizona, where she learned Spanish and developed a love for Latin America. She travelled and lived in South America for a while before returning to school to earn a Master of Arts in Education, again from the University of Arizona. There she met the love of her life, Javier Guerrero (deceased), with whom she would come to share a life filled with family, love, laughter, and travel. They had two daughters, Laura and Regina, but Carol’s life as a mother was also deeply enriched by the love she had for Javier’s children from a previous marriage, Andrea and Javier. She was later blessed with five grandchildren, Django, Kai, Chiara, Dylan, and Sullivan, with whom she shared her love of reading and learning.
Carol had a long career as a dedicated teacher, during which she imparted her wisdom and lifelong love of learning to her high school students. In retirement, she channeled her love of learning into a passion for travel. She traveled around the world with Javier, learning about other places and cultures, bringing her insights and reflections back to share with family and friends. She and Javier were patrons of the arts, supporting and enjoying symphony concerts and theatrical performances around San Diego. Carol was also an avid bird watcher and enjoyed the time she spent in nature with them. She was an excellent cook and will always be remembered by the Mexican side of the family for introducing everyone to the American feast of Thanksgiving.
She will be remembered by those who knew her as a kind, loving, and quietly generous person. If there was a way to help or care for someone, she would unhesitatingly open her arms (and often her home) to them. She supported efforts to promote democracy and social justice in the world and to protect our natural environment. She gave her wisdom, her time, her kindness, and her love in the spirit of Saint Francis, that “it is in giving that we receive,” and she died with the faith that “it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to any of Carol’s favorite charities: the American Heart Association, the Audubon Society, or Doctors Without Borders.
