I was lucky enough to work with Nick over the past couple of years in Defra in the regulation team. He was such a thoughtful, intelligent man. My overwhelming impression of him was always how calm and kind he was. Nick would always be supportive and he watched out for everyone. For instance, in lockdown when I was struggling with home schooling, Nick would always take the time to send me an encouraging email or to check in that I was OK and it was clear in our discussions how much he loved his own kids.
Nick was also careful, in the best sense of the word. If I asked for comments, Nick would always make time, no matter how much he had on his plate. He was my “go to” person for checking anything – he was full of insight and would always look beyond his own area. I knew if Nick checked something, it would be right. But he wasn’t just “careful” because he was thorough and good with detail. He genuinely cared. If I ever referenced a farmer as “he”, I could always rely on Nick to politely call me out and tell me I should say “they” or “he or she”.
Finally, Nick was very funny. He had a wonderful dry sense of humour and was just a lovely person to be around. I will really miss him.
