Prof MBT Umar was born in 1962 in Jos. He attended Andaha Local Education Authority Primary School before proceeding to the famous Government College, Keffi. At the completion of his secondary education, he was admitted at the prestigious University of Jos to study Medicine. He was at the famous Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria for his masters and doctoral training in Anatomy. He started as a Lecturer II at the University of Jos and became a professor of Anatomy in the year 2004. He served as the Head, Department of Anatomy for several years contributing significantly to the building and development of the department. He was later the Deputy Dean of Medicine before his appointment as the Deputy Director of Academic planning and later the Director of Academic planning, University of Jos. He was in that position till April, 2020. He had trained several masters and doctoral students and had helped in assess several of such students from various universities in Nigeria. He was a very regular face on the NUC and MDCN accreditation team to numerous colleges of medicine in Nigeria. He had served in the national leadership of the Anatomical Society of Nigeria and before his demise, he was the National president of the Medical and Dental Specialist in Basic Medical Sciences. He served in this pioneering role with courage and style leading to tremendous progress. Prof. Umar went to the great beyond on the 12th of May, 2020 following brief illness. He was survived by his aged mother, two wives, seven children and many brothers and sisters.
