Maureen Laffey

May 2, 1950 - May 5, 2021

The LTA were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maureen at the age of 71. In an officiating career spanning over 45 years, Maureen reached the highest levels of officiating, both on and off court, and was a Gold Badge Chief Umpire. Maureen worked as an official at The Championships, Wimbledon on 47 occasions. Maureen was a line umpire on numerous finals at Wimbledon, including being the first female line umpire on a Men's Singles Final in 1987. Maureen represented the Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) on the LTA Council for 13 years before stepping down at the end of 2020. During her time on Council, Maureen served on the Disciplinary and Coach Licensing & Registration Committees. Maureen was the former Honorary Treasurer of ABTO and served on the Management Committee since ABTO was founded in 2000 until March 2021. Maureen made an outstanding contribution to tennis and to British officiating over many years. Her passion, dedication, loyalty and good humour will be sorely missed by the LTA and many officials from all over world who had the pleasure of working with her. Our thoughts are with Maureen's family and friends.

I was shocked and saddened to learn of Maureen's passing while working a tennis event in the US. That "moving day" is anticipated for each of us, but it's never easy to accept when it happens suddenly. Linda and I will miss visiting and working with Maureen at The Championships. I will miss our morning drive into work where we had a chance to talk about various topics not always involving tennis. The light of the world is a little dimmer now, but oh how the light of Heaven shines a little brighter. Farewell, my friend!
