Maureen Laffey

May 2, 1950 - May 5, 2021

The LTA were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Maureen at the age of 71. In an officiating career spanning over 45 years, Maureen reached the highest levels of officiating, both on and off court, and was a Gold Badge Chief Umpire. Maureen worked as an official at The Championships, Wimbledon on 47 occasions. Maureen was a line umpire on numerous finals at Wimbledon, including being the first female line umpire on a Men's Singles Final in 1987. Maureen represented the Association of British Tennis Officials (ABTO) on the LTA Council for 13 years before stepping down at the end of 2020. During her time on Council, Maureen served on the Disciplinary and Coach Licensing & Registration Committees. Maureen was the former Honorary Treasurer of ABTO and served on the Management Committee since ABTO was founded in 2000 until March 2021. Maureen made an outstanding contribution to tennis and to British officiating over many years. Her passion, dedication, loyalty and good humour will be sorely missed by the LTA and many officials from all over world who had the pleasure of working with her. Our thoughts are with Maureen's family and friends.

Maureen and I both started working at Wimbledon in the early 1970's. We supported each other then as "rookies" and over 40 years later Maureen supported me as my "buddy" when I joined the LTA Council. We were also together on the 1987 Men's Singles Final. Maureen as the first woman to work on a line in a men's final and me in the Umpire's chair. Great to look around the court at the change of ends and see Maureen's supportive, smiling face! As we approach Wimbledon 2021 it's so hard to believe that Maureen will not be there with us. I will greatly miss her friendship, expertise, commitment and especially her smile.

I’m still shocked and saddened by this news. We last communicated before Christmas and you sounded cheerful and positive for the future. In all the years I’ve known you, you have always been direct and honest, but deep inside you were also a very sensitive, generous and a very protective person. I’ve lots of memories of you, still remember all our conversations outside the buttery at Wimbledon, whether personal or tennis related you always gave me your impartial view (whether I like it or not) whilst respecting me and my views. I will miss you very much and Thank you for everything. RIP Maureen.
