Over years of working alongside each other in the housing and development sector in South Africa, Matthew and I found common ground on many subjects like housing policy and finance, urban land markets, and integrated development planning. I grew to count on him as a friend and ally and our occasional meetings turned into more regular contact. We would meet every few years to have a cup of tea and catch up on our work and lives. I got glimpses of the personalities and interests of his children through his stories about them. His pride in their achievements always made his eyes sparkle. He talked also about his cycling adventures and misadventures, always the entertaining raconteur. I relied on him as a trusted advisor and mentor, and he never let me down. Always sharing his opinions and advice in a gentle and generous way. I will miss our conversations very much. Sending love to his family-at-home and his Shisaka family.
