Here he is with trademark office attire - CROCS! He was wearing them way before they became fashionable!

First guy I sat next to in August 2006 when I joined SDL. Since that day he was a excellent colleague and close friend. He was always positive and never failed to make me laugh even just with a facial expression or random comment as our sense of humor was very much aligned. We both hail from Chesterfield so I have spent numerous train and taxi rides back together most of which after Xmas parties or nights out so you can imagine these were lively encounters as Matt was a huge personality with so many stories to tell. I really have nothing bad to say about this guy, he truly is a legend in my eyes and I will never forget him and my deepest condolences go out to Sue and Joe and the rest of his family.

Matt was one of those people who you may rarely actually work with directly, but if you're in the same office, you could not fail to hear him, know he is, be targeted for a proper good chat, and be infected by his warmth and sheer positivity. He had a unique approach to life and work and people. Matt and I shared a commute quite often over the years, and he brightened the journey so much with banter, life reflections, musical musings, many good ale and pub recommendations, loud humour, all in his beloved Crocs. I feel grateful for all this, and that's a mark of a true and genuine soul.

I have many memories of Matt, but two stand out: one is a life lesson, and the other one, to me, sums up Matt at work. In the old office I used to sit just a couple of desks away and I could hear the Support calls. Matt was on the phone with a customer who was complaining about how long a ticket was taking, and he said, very calmly: "The problem is that we haven't found a solution yet." To me, this sort of sums up Matt at work. This was an absolutely undebatable truth, and I remember the call finished shortly after, because who can argue with that? On his leaving do before going to Boulder, we were stood outside the Old Queens Head, and I was telling Matt how I admired and envied his ability to stay calm in the face of any kind of customer. As part of Support of course he had upset customers, shouty customers - but I never saw him losing his temper, or even looking anything less than relaxed and find with it. Matt asked me: "If I went by your desk and gave you a box full of shit and said it was a gift, would you keep it? Other people's moods, or the fact they are upset with you or what they think of you is like that box, you don't have to take it. You don't have to keep it." I remember feeling my mind completely blown at this point. And this was just one example of his way of looking at life, different from most of us who just follow the rat race like good little mice. I think Matt was several steps ahead of most of us in his way of thinking. To this day, every time I hear a sentence started with "The problem is", my brain auto-completes with "We haven't found a solution yet." I just wish I had more time to learn more lessons from him.

Though I'm no longer apart of the SDL family ... when I was Matt was one of the 1st people I met while he was visiting the Superior office. He went out of his way to make me feel welcome. I am thankful for the opportunity to have known such a uniquely wonderful person like Matt. ~“Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.”

I was stood next to Matt with pint in hand in a packed pub, and out of nowhere Matt broke into full song. I must say, it was pretty dam good singing.
