Funeral Service: 5 February 2021 @ 12:00 Send your details to bit.ly/MariusMeyer to receive the link to the live stream link. It is with extreme sadness that we announce the heart-breaking news of the untimely passing of our colleague, but also our dear friend, Marius Meyer. He was a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Industrial Psychology, Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, University of Stellenbosch, where he was the Programme Leader for Human Resource Management programmes, including the newly launched Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management that was developed based on his vision to position HR as strategic business partner. Marius was a remarkable, passionate, kind and extremely humorous soul who could lighten up any conversation with his contagious laugh. He was a caring individual, which naturally emerged in the way he invested himself in his classes and engagements with students. He impacted the lives of many students, colleagues, and friends through his passion for people as well as his inspiration, and commitment to advance and grow the profession of Human Resource Management (HRM) globally. He left a remarkable legacy as HRM thought leader and will forever be remembered and recognised for his leadership and commitment to the development of South Africa's first national HR governance framework, which includes the first national set of human capital metrics for companies. He has been a human resource development practitioner, consultant, academic, board member and manager for the past 24 years. As the former chief executive of the professional body for HR practitioners, the SA Board for People Practices (SABPP), he was responsible for the quality assurance of 82 learning providers, as well as the HR accreditation of all universities in South Africa. For the last two years he was the Chairperson of the SABPP. His passion for leadership, strategy, governance, organisation development, change management and people development is evident in the numerous books and articles that he published as well as the consulting interventions for more than 200 companies. He was a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences and left a mark on the world that cannot be erased. Marius received an honorary doctoral degree from the Vaal University of Technology (VUT) in 2018 and a life-time achievement award from the SABPP for his contribution and meritorious service to the profession. As colleagues, we wish to celebrate his life as a tribute to his powerful legacy of recognising people as central to business success and making a strategic contribution to people management in South Africa. He was an esteemed colleague, but even more a loving, caring, and passionate friend. We’ve lost a gentle giant and phenomenal academic and practitioner who will be immensely missed. We are deeply saddened by the loss of our colleague and during this difficult time of mourning, we offer our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Hanlie and his daughter, Nadia, to his parents, family, colleagues and to everyone who engaged with Marius. He touched each and every one of our lives and he will be deeply missed and never forgotten. May you have strength and take comfort in the memories that you have as we bid farewell to a valuable member of our team. May Marius forever rest in peace. Aletta Odendaal and Colleagues Department of Industrial Psychology

Such incredibly sad news. Cherished memories of working with you at MTR III School in Saldanha. Sharp sense of humour and an infectious laughter. Above all you were mature beyond your years at that time and left an indelible mark on students and everyone who knew you. Taken far too early. Rest easy.

Dr Marius Meyer: A selfless Leader who served the Human Resources profession through higher education training and development I cherish all the memories of Marius and the many humble acts of lifting others up so that they too could help to influence and change the shape of the Human Resources profession! It was an honour to watch Marius receive his honorary Doctorate from VUT on 11 September 2018; a single moment when the profession was given the opportunity to acknowledge a great HR Leader who put the 'human' back into Human Resources. It was a privilege to interview Marius for the role of CEO as a member of the 2009/2010 SABPP Board, and to watch the SABPP transform into the Professional body it has become today! Marius has mentored so many HR professionals throughout his career, and I am confident that these Mentees will come forward to serve the HR Profession now and in the years to come. Marius has made us all proud to stand up as HR Professionals, it is now our turn to make Marius proud....and to continue the race, which lies ahead - to pass the baton so that the HR Profession can continue to move forward. Marius it is not goodbye...but until we meet again.

Marius was a truly wonderful colleague. He thought deeply about issues and was always willing to share his thoughts and ideas. He was the epitome of a team player. During the lockdown he wrote many inspiring blog pieces (https://www.sun.ac.za/english/Lists/notices/DispForm.aspx?ID=1508) that provided so much inspiration and comfort to us all. I was very touched that he dedicated his piece on mothers to me as mothers day in 2020 was just a few days after my own mother passed away. He was such a thoughtful and caring soul and we will all miss him terribly.

Soon after I met Marius we realised that we both have our wedding anniversary on the 6th of January! But what is even more special is that his parents, his sister as well as our son also share the anniversary. Every year on the 6th Marius sent me a message of congratulations. I will especially remember your sense of humour and your sharing nature. We enjoyed discussing the American election and our enjoyment of wine. You loved living here in the wine lands and your Instagram postings of your walks around not only your estate but all the other nature reserves were a constant reminder of the beauty around us. Our thoughts are with Hanlie and Nadia. Marius, you will always be remembered and will never be forgotten.

What a leader!! He gave the first yes to the wine industry newly established Professional Body, SAWIPB. He said yes because of his passion for people development and he could see the impact it could have on the industry. He was a board member at Winetech representing my department, learning and development. We had so many plans, but he left me with a well thought trough business plan. My heart is aching, we will miss his character, friendliness and commitment to our industry. Our thoughts are with Hanlie and Nadia and the rest of his family. Rest in Peace Marius x

Marius was the most supportive and helpful colleague it was possible to have: he will be sorely missed by all those who ever worked with him. When he was at the SABPP I was at the UK Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and we collaborated on a range of projects. His knowledge and intellect was immediately apparent and he brought the best out of people. He took me to South Africa and I was able to bring him to the UK and our families became friends. Prayers will be said for him this weekend in our parishes in North Norfolk. My picture is of a happy time we spent together watching the Lions play the Bulls. Our thoughts are with Hanlie and Nadia and the rest of his family. Martyn and Anne Sloman

A young girl who had recently graduated from varsity with a National Diploma in HR and was pursuing a BTech in HR found herself in the employment of SABPP as an HR Intern. Being the first in her a family to attend University, she had no idea on how a qualification in HR could further her career or her life. Growing up in a fairly empoverished community, a profession and the corporate world seemed like only a dream. On the 12th January 2015 I first met Marius Meyer during my interview for the HR Intern position at SABPP. I was offered the internship and 7 months later appointed as a permanent staff member. The next three years had me attending several HR seminars, traveling across South Africa to speak at Universities and accredited training providers, completing my Honours Degree in HR and becoming an established Learning and Development professional. Marius played a pivotal role in the person I am today, both in my personal and professional capacity. In February 2016 I received the SABPP CEO Special Recognition Award, until this day and most probably for the rest of my life, this award will be the most meaningful gift I have received. In it, was the belief in me by a man who was well known and established in the HR Industry, in it was all the motivation I needed, in it was the promise of a better future and a bright career. I am abundantly grateful and deeply indebted to Marius Meyer for who I am today. God could not have blessed me with a better first employer. Today I have a Honours Degree due to the Bursary I received from SABPP under his leadership, I have a deep passion for people development and a great pride for my profession. My condolences to his wife, daughter and family and in turn my greatest appreciation to them as well for sharing Marius with us all. He has touched so many lives and has made a significant difference to this world. He will live on in every HR Professional now and in years to come. Rest well Marius Meyer, Rest in Glory. With Sadness and love, The young girl who you saw the light in...

This was our last parkrun together, a promise you kept, taking me doing the Kayamandi parkrun. always a great sport and fun to be with and always ready for a selfie. Always challenging me, pushing me to be the beste of myself, always giving me books, force me to read and expect feedback. I'm going to miss our conversations, how we use to talk everyday, your voice, you smile, jokes and your laugh.I will forever treasure our memories. May your soul rest in peace my dear friend Maruis. When I was a student, I attended a SABPP workshop and courageously went to introduce myself to Dr. Meyer. He was very kind and friendly and also gave me his business card. Later when I was looking for work after graduating, I contacted him and he was supportive. Almost 10 years later I saw he became a lecturer at the Industrial Psychology department at Stellenbosch University, and I went to say hi. He still remembered me and was very friendly. What a great person that will be dearly missed.

This photo was taken before my trip to Kruger Park. I remember the nice talks we had about the big five and all other Kruger game. Marius was very excited about my journey, and he shared his own experiences from Kruger. It was so delightful to listen. We also shared a good laugh. And, honestly, who couldn’t resist Marius’ laughs! Of all photos, I find this one revealing Marius for what he really meant to me: a cheerful friend, a brilliant colleague, and someone who always made you smile and laugh! I will miss you, Marius.

On 19 January I saw Marius for the last time. It was during an online workshop for the lecturers of the Strategic HR Management Postgraduate programme that he spearheaded, coordinated, and that he would have co-facilitated. It was such a special moment to see the whole team together, and everyone agreed that his gentle leadership and guidance brought us to this point. Every person on this photo thought of him as a kind and admirable colleague. We miss him dearly.

I took this photo during the Industry Leaders Session in 2019 when we were still very busy developing the Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management. I will always remember Marius as someone who was passionate about his profession. Marius often won the Industrial Psychology Top Lecturer Award. Evidence of how loved he was by his students. You leave such a big gap in our lives, Marius. We will miss you and remember you always.

It is with deep gratitude and sadness that I had to bid you goodbye on Tuesday 26 January, 2021, at 19h27 with a Whatsapp message, still being typical ‘Mother’: “I keep trying and your phone is off. I hope you are fine”. I now have to believe that you are fine. And I know you are God’s child. You are fine. My mother (whose father was a priest) used to tell me that people who have passed on are happy where they are. When I asked her why, her answer consoles me each time I think of a departed loved one, it is consoling me again with you: “they must be happy where they are, none of them come back”. Marius I will not forget your respect for me, for my thoughts and my decisions. The arguments we had mainly strengthened our respect and admiration for each other. Had it not been so, you as CEO of SABPP, the Board at that time would not have revived and put our professional body where it is. I thank you and the SABPP Board. On behalf of the HR profession, thank you. You again approached me and suggested that we form an HR Governance Committee so that we develop the HR Governance Framework and standard. Again, brilliant idea; in your honour we will finish the HR Governance standard. You introduced me to Nadia and Hanlie. Thank you. If they allow me, I will continue with the relationship we started. You had the courage of your convictions; you walked your mile. The HR fraternity will miss you; I will miss you. Fare thee well From your Zulu mother MaDhlamini
