After Marian died and the initial shock had worn off I started thinking of our lives together as children.
One of my earliest memories was of the plays we used to put on with our cousins in the lounge with various relatives present and we children all dressed up in parents’ clothes and make up, etc. We had great fun.
Another memory was going to the Wilds with our cardboard sheets (broken cardboard boxes) and sliding down the hills – our idea of sledding.
Marian also had her naughty side - with our cousin, Mark who lived next door. They locked Matthew in the pool pump room and demanded ransom money from my mother who refused. So they forgot about him until dinner time when Mom asked where he was – There was a frantic rush to free him.
They also made him walk the plank in our fishpond where he fell off and cut his foot badly. So she may have looked like this angelic child – but not quite!
As we got older we had midnight feasts and built an underground clubhouse next door with our cousins. As adults Matthew and Marian shared a house –living separately, one upstairs, the other downstairs. This was when space invaders was the craze and they were both addicted. If anyone wanted to find either one of them they had to phone the corner café because they would be there until closing time.
Marian was a very caring and involved family member. She was always interested and involved in what my kids were up to. When there were problems I knew I could always turn to her for help and advice.
We would meet for lunch periodically to catch up with news but from the start of lock-down we could only do this telephonically.
I already miss Marian very much and I send my love and sympathy to Janet, Ben;, Wicus, Sam and Kelsey.
