Dear Janet, Ben, Sam and family I write to send you all my deep and sincere condolences for your loss of Marian. I was very saddened when Benita gave me the news, and I can only imagine your devastation at her sudden and unexpected departure from our world. Marian has a profound influence on my life from the time when I got to know her in the 1980s. I was later to spend some of the happiest years of my working life with her at HAP in the early 1990s. Marian was a person with a deep commitment to a democratic society, a vibrant non-governmental sector and an orderly world. She dedicated much of her life to building the leadership of civil society in South Africa, and in due course in Africa, and introducing her own very remarkable brand of orderliness in the often unpragmatic and chaotic non-governmental world. She had the most remarkable ability to cut through the b…shit and reach the root cause of organizational problems. She never shied away from speaking truth to even her most prestigious clients. Her organizational development solutions were always wholistic and thorough. I often think her when dealing with the many, somewhat superficial, management consultants one meets in the government terrain. I always have a little inner chuckle when I imagine how she would have set them straight. Those of us who worked for her, needed to handle her straight talk and her eye for detail and precision. But if you followed her wisdom, she offered training, development and mentorship equal to no other. Her care and guidance was not confined to the work space and over the years she offered excellent advice on parenting, service providers, cooking, gardening, relationships and many other aspects of life. Although Marian was a strict task madam, she also had a great sense of humour. We once worked for an organization that shall remain nameless. After wading through its chaotic processes for some time, Marian asked to see the filing system. After some hesitation she was taken outside to the fire escape where huge stacks of documents were blowing in the wind. She regailed us with that story with much hilarity at dinner for years afterwards. Dear Janet, Ben, and Sam, Marian was a wonderful and caring parent and spouse. Her love and concern for all of you was always part of everything she did, and she never tired of telling us about you and your successes. As you mourn her passing I hope you will draw strength that her very best qualities live on in you all. Her love for you made her very productive and effective life happy and fulfilled. She will be greatly missed by all of us. Strength to all of you in these difficult days Barbara
