Mr. H was not only a fantastic teacher but a kind and caring soul. Everything he did was done with the purest intention at heart, which showed through his teaching. Once, Mr.H was demonstrating how atoms expand in gasses. In true Mr.H style, he ran around the room with a few students, literally hopping over his desk with one arm, and his legs kicked out, knocking off half his papers! On any given day, he would be seen with half his shirt untucked and his collar popped: that was almost always due to the passion and playfulness he put into every day of his job. And despite all he did in the classroom, he always had more time to put into his home life with his boys and wife. He was a never ending vessel of love and energy for everyone around him. There is no doubt that Mr. Hruska left a piece of his wisdom in every soul he touched, and I am truly honoured to have known him.

Lee was a top-notch, well rounded student during his time at Anderson Collegiate. I have fond memories of how much fun he had tearing up the Anderson Ball Hockey League. It was very special when a few years later I was a guest in his Grade 8 class at Thornton, as the co-op and guidance teacher visiting from Anderson. I was so proud of the persona he delivered to his students. Such a passionate and positive vibe that will be remembered for years to come. Lee Hruska has left a memory that his family, friends and students can emulate forever. Rest in Peace my Friend Ken Scott Retired ACVI Teacher

When I was stationed in Quebec just starting out in my career on a weekend me and a couple of my buddy’s went for a drive into Montreal. When we got there and was driving around so many mommies just hit me out of nowhere from our grade 8 grad trip. I vividly remembered the party on the ship and Mr. Hruska just showing off all of his many dance moves and having dance off’s with every student who would challenge him. Mr. Hruska made every trip and class as memorable as possible had a huge impact on so many people and just had the greatest positive Spirit imaginable. Rest In Peace Mr. Hruska.

Mr. Hruska was the bright ray of light in an otherwise not too happy elementary school tenure. He was my Grade 8 teacher, and my little brother's too. He always believed in me, encouraged me, built me up, and made me feel understood. He made me look forward to coming to school every day. He was a very special person, not just in the classroom, but I am sure in the lives of all who knew him. To this day, I hear "booyeah" and think of him - DRT Class of 2011, you know what I mean. My thoughts and prayers are with his family as they grieve the loss of such a kind soul. He is and will be dearly missed.

Words can not express how saddened I am by this loss. Taught me in Grade 7 and 8, encouraged me to go above and beyond in my academic achievements, he made me confident in mathematics, and always encouraged me to believe in myself. Mr. Hruska also taught my sister back when I was a little kid. Mr. Hruska made the environment fun and enjoyable. No words can express how saddened I am by this. Condolences to the Hruska family. I am also saddened for the students who could never experience the full teaching length of Mr. Hruska through their grades. Rest in Peace, Mr. Hruska.

When I think of my time at Thornton, I think of Mr. Hruska and the impact he had on me. I was in his class in grade 7 and 8 and he was always a wonderful teacher and coach throughout it all. You could tell he loved his job, students and everyone he interacted with. He made going to school and learning a fun experience. The nature walks, the fun science competitions and the countless other examples of him going out of his way to put a smile on everyone's face made him such a joy to be around. I remember him jumping around in the Montréal hotel when the raptors won their championship and always having a can of diet Pepsi on his desk. He inspired me and countless others to strive for excellence in academics, athletics and just being a good person. He will be deeply missed.

Rest in peace Mr. Hruska. He was an amazing teacher who cared so much about his students. I can remember one science lab where he brought in water from a local pond so we could prepare our own slides and examine them under microscopes. I will always be grateful to him for inspiring my love of science❤️

Mr. Hruska was a dedicated, caring, and compassionate teacher, coach, and person. I will always remember how he went above and beyond for all his students, and how he truly cared for us. From our nature walks, ping pong tournaments, and bridge building competitions, Mr. Hruska made our intermediate elementary experience awesome. He is the one who sparked my love for science through his creative and engaging science demonstrations and projects he made for us. I am so thankful I got to be in his class for 3 years and for the time he spent making an amazing experience for all his students.

Mr. H was an amazing man who gave so much love to everyone lucky enough to have had him in their lives. I was a student of his in 2015-16 but kept a relationship with him in the years following. As a teacher, he made every day in the classroom interesting and exciting. I specifically remember his immune system lesson that saw him playing the role of an antibody, wearing his hardhat and yelling and banging his meter stick to get the white blood cells attention (other students) so they could take out the virus. As a coach, Mr. H gave all of his dedication to every team he was a part of. His emotion and involvement during the championship games of basketball tournament was all the fuel our team needed to come away with big wins. A special memory was durham finals in my grade 8 year for cross country. Mr. Hruska had just come off a big race of his own coming in the top ten of the teacher race, and telling us it was our turn to do our thing. Celebrating with him and the rest if the team is one of my fondest memories of that year. Throughout high school he was always one of the first to message me asking how the races went, how fellow Thunderbirds did and also any other Raiders, even people he had never met because he just cared for everyone. As I babysit his boys, Nathan and Ryan, it is so clear how much they adore their father. The way they spoke of him, how Ryan would hug him and refuse to let go as he head out, and how Nathan would wait up until he got home, are just some of the ways I saw this love. I remember thinking to myself, this is how I want my kids to love me. I know Mr. H touched the hearts of everybody he met, because that’s just who he is.

Mr. Hruska was truly a teacher that cared. He cared to see his students succeed and grow. I will never forget the fun lessons, the meaningful conversations, and the memories. I wasn’t an easy kid to deal with, but Mr. Hruska didn’t give up on me and pushed me to do better, and for that I am so thankful. You are so missed, and you will never be forgotten. ❤️

Mr. Hruska was known as the grade 8 teacher at Thornton. You knew you would get him in the intermediate years, and looking back at it, I'm so glad that is how it went. Our pre-teen years are difficult to navigate, and Mr. Hruska put so much thought into helping us grow into good people. No matter what home room you were in, Mr. H treated you as his own. He taught grade 7 and 8 science and no matter if you liked the subject or not, you liked his class. I remember fondly the many fun projects we did, like a bridge building competition, a functioning hydraulic sculpture, and of course, when he (and we) would stand on the tables to show the stages of matter. Something that stuck with me, though, since graduating in 2013 was his DJ and dance skills. He would boogie on the stage right in front of us and lead us in the YMCA. He would always play these same handful of songs at every school dance, and I have spent the years trying to remember them all. The "Lee Hruska Staples" playlist is 1. Livin' On A Prayer 2. Don't Stop Believin' 3. Lips of An Angel 4. For The Nights I Can't Remember and 5. It's My Life I remember he played the largest part in my class' gad trip happening during the 2013 work to rule. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't have gotten the opportunity to go to Quebec and experience such a fun and memorable trip. He played a huge part in the memorial for our late classmate Michael Turner. He checked in on us even thought it was a year after leaving his class. He was someone who always cared deeply. As a future educator, I have been looking up to him since the start. Sending all my love and healing to his family and friends, and all the Thornton Thunderbirds that had the pleasure of knowing him. We miss you, Mr. H

I was a student of Mr. Hruska in 2013 and can easily say that he was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had. His passion for science made the entire class interested in even the most boring subjects. I’ll always remember him standing on his desk and singing to “Living on a Prayer”. He cared so much about each and every student and made school the happiest place to be. Words can’t explain how greatly he will be missed by our community. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this time. May he rest in peace❤️.

I worked closely with Mr Hruska when I put together the graduation media for the kids grade 8 graduation. He was so positive, supportive and engaged. He really had the kids’ best interests at heart. Just a great guy and a very sad day indeed
