A CITATION ON ELDER LAZARUS NWAMU EKEKE, JP
Elder Lazarus Nwamu Ekeke was born on Sunday the 17th February, 1929 in Umuagbai Ndoki in Oyigbo L.G.A. of Rivers State and grew up as a committed Christian.
His early education took-off in 1939 when he attended Umuagbai Primary School, Umuagbai after which he proceeded to Methodist School Taabaa in 1946 where he did his Standard 5 and he found favour in the sight of Mr. M.P. Saronwiyo, then his Headmaster who registered him for entrance examination to Methodist College Uzuakoli without reference to his parents.
In 1947, he was in the Methodist College Uzuakoli, where he obtained Senior Cambridge School Certificate Grade One in 1952.
In 1953, he proceeded to Technical Institute Yaba where he trained as Electrical Engineering Assistant under the Electricity Cooperation of Nigeria.
In 1955, Elder L.N.Ekeke fired by the desire for higher learning gained admission into the Nation’s Premier Degree Awarding Institution, University College, Ibadan and obtained Intermediate B.Sc. in Engineering. He also enrolled in the University College Ibadan for B.Sc. Honours in Physics with the Anglican Mission scholarship in 1963. Elder Ekeke, later attended University of Benin where he obtained Postgraduate Diploma in Education in 1982.
Elder Ekeke had an amiable rising working profile which began in 1953 when he was a teacher in charge of Junior Games Methodist College Uzuakoli, between 1958 and 1960, he worked with the Shell Petroleum Development Company Owerri/Port Harcourt.
In 1963, he was a teacher in Western Ahoada county High School, Ahoada where he rose to become the Vice Principal in 1965.
In 1966, he was Vice Principal, Ndoki county Grammar School, Obohia Ndoki. In 1971, he was Principal of Technical College Ohanso Ndoki, and in 1972 he was Principal in Boy’s Technical College Aba.
1977, he was a Principal at Government Secondary School Eberi omuma. In 1978 he was posted back to Western Ahoada County High School Ahoada as Principal.
1982, Elder Ekeke became the Zonal Chief inspector of Education Bori. In 1984, he was Chairman, Rivers State Schools Management Board, Port Harcourt.
In 1986, He was Chairman Science and Technical Committee Ministry of Education, Port Harcourt. In 1987, his composite personality and wide range of experience earned him appointment as the Electoral Officer, National Electoral Commission OTELGA.
In 1989, he became Principal at Government Secondary School Umuagbai and 1991, he was the Zonal Supervisor of School Oyigbo Zonal Office and retired meritoriously in 1992.
OTHER POSITIONS OF TRUST
1n 1970, Elder Ekeke was a Zonal Chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers. In 1974. He was a member of Joint Consultative Council Reference Committee on Technical Education Federal Ministry of Education.
In 1973, he was Co-Chief Examiner for WAEC in Physics Practical. In 1977, he was a member, State Committee of WAEC. In 1978 he was a Member, Land Allocation Advisory Committee BOLGA. In 1981, he was a Member, Police Community Relation Committee OTELGA.
In 1987, he was an Official Participant, United Nations meeting of experts in Space Science and Technology and its application within the framework of educational system Lagos.
In 1994, Rivers State representative at the meeting of leaders of thought with the Commander-in-Chief and Head of State general Sani Abacha heralding the constitutional conference of 1994.
In 1996, he was appointed as Justice of Peace. From 2001 till date he has been Commissioner, Body of Appeal Commissioners Ministry of Finance, Port Harcourt.
His hobbies are, reading, Tennis and playing Scrabble.
Elder L.N.Ekeke is happily married with children. And he has 22 grandchildren.
