I've known John since 2006. However, I didn't actually start talking to John until some years later since we weren't working in the same section and I was intimidated by his loud booming voice, being that I'm a quiet person. Not sure how we started talking, but I'm glad we did. I discovered that he was a softie at heart and his booming voice was just a volume. When all our colleagues whom we've worked with over the past 10 years or so started leaving the division (due to management), John became my go-to for comfort and support and we'd reminisce about the good ol' days. I guess having our colleagues leaving us behind was a blessing in disguise, because otherwise, we'd never had gotten to be the friends that we had become.
