Such sad news! I joined the charity when it was The Stuart Strange Trust. I can therefore really appreciate the transformation that John (and Sue) have made to the charity. He was always helpful and ready to give advice , even when he must have been so busy. Nothing waa ever too much trouble. He worked hard for such a long time to the benefit of us all. Christine Lee

John was a beacon of light and hope for me during my journey with vasculitis. I first connected with him in 2015, after being forced to quit my Rheumatology career due to the illness. He spurred me on and after meeting him and Susan in 2016 at the BSR in Glasgow, we worked on various projects. Our Saturday evening Skype calls were an absolute delight. He dedicated his time and energy selflessly and tirelessly to the vasculitis community. Here, he is joining me to do a lap during my moving forward with vasculitis 5k walking challenge 2years ago, at the Manchester arena. Thank you John for everything you did for me and the vasculitis community. You will remain alive in our hearts always. Be at peace, my friend. Shanali Perera

John and (‘my’) Susan were regular visitors at Litton school. A lovely man who will be sadly missed by his equally lovely granddaughters. I was a pleasure to know him Bridget Hanley

John (and Susan) saved my life back in 2009 before Vasculitis UK was born (formerly Stuart Strange Vasculitis Trust) when I first contacted them, for which I will be eternally grateful. I then started volunteering as a way to pay back the kindness shown to me. I learned so much about my form of Vasculitis (as well as plenty of others) from John, meaning I was better able to advocate for myself and others. The progress I’ve seen within my hospital trust (Leeds) alone is remarkable but I know he was also responsible for hospitals all over the UK, Europe and other countries becoming more aware of Vasculitis, how to diagnose it more rapidly and will have saved thousands of lives around the world thanks to his dedication. I was proud to call John my friend but even more proud to call him my hero. No one deserved the MBE he received more than him and I’m glad he was recognised for his hard work, dedication and selflessness for the Vasculitis community worldwide. I will choose to remember him as the intelligent, dedicated, caring man he was with his fabulous sense of humour that was often displayed with a glint in his eye. My heart goes out to Susan and his family who have lost their world. The world and the Vasculitis community has also lost a legend but, thanks to his work with Vasculitis UK, his legacy will live on forever. Sleep tight John and rest in peace my friend. Your fellow ginger ninja, Kelly xxx

Condolences to Johns wife and family. Such an wonderful man and an amazing dentist. Mr Mills as I knew him, sorted my teeth out from being a small child. I grew up visiting for check ups and other extensive dental work in my teenage years, as I had gaps in my teeth and needed brace. I remember his kindness, softly spoken and very calm person. He was just the best Dentist ever. As I got older I went through a rough patch and neglected my teeth for a few years, I wrote Mr Mills a personal letter apologizing for neglecting my teeth, explaining that I couldn't see another dentist, would he please take a look at my teeth, as I was about to get married. He made it as I could smile again. I am so grateful at 47 years old I still have those beautiful teeth he so carefully took care of as I grew up. Thank you so much John a true legend may you rest in peace xx
