I met João fort the first time at a meeting at the primary school “de Nude” in Wageningen, in a discussion the school organized with some parents on bi-lingual teaching. Joao’s children were already bi-lingual, maybe tri-lingual… It took me some time to find out that João was the father of António, classmate of Lucas, and Ariana, classmate of Nico.
Lucas remembers well that, when playing at António’s home, João would call them to come and eat fruit that he prepared. Later, I found out that we had a “shared past” working in Mozambique for rural development.
Nico went to Portugal in 2019, to learn Portuguese (again) and he visited João and António in Alportel, were he was received with great hospitality. He spent one week, enjoying the company, the discussions, and the cooking of João and António. João encouraged him to speak Portuguese: you speak well, you just need to learn more words….
Jolanda, Ariana en António, wij wensen jullie heel veel sterkte met jullie verlies.
Samen met jullie zullen we de herinnering aan João levend houden.
Mirjam, Nico, Lucas
