George was born and raised in Monroe, Michigan. He earned a BA from Albion College, and Masters degrees from Western Michigan and the University of Michigan. During his career, he spent time working in Puerto Rico, at the Library of Congress, the University of Tennessee, and finally at the University of Oregon, where he worked until he retired. He is survived by his loving wife, Krystyna Shipman, and his two sons, Brian Shipman and Andrew Shipman, and their respective families.

George came to the University of Oregon Library system in 1980. After less than a year, a vacancy occurred in the Circulation Department and George must have seen something in me, because he took a chance and promoted me. I was grateful for the opportunities he put in my path. I learned a great deal watching him, and working with and for him. I credit much of my success at the UO Libraries to George: his example and his work ethic. The UO Libraries owes a great deal to George, to his leadership, to his vision and energy, and his ability to get major changes implemented. During his tenure the libraries went from near zero automation to a fully automated system, he brought together all the higher ed. schools in Oregon into a library consortium, and that consortium grew beyond Oregon to Washington, the UO Press was born, several of the UO library buildings underwent expansion -- some very major, the UO libraries reorganized along more traditional academic library structures, library giving and fund-raising programs were established, and I'm pretty sure there were even more positive changes that I am unaware of or have forgotten. The man was an explosion. On another note: once, when I had a personal (family and campus) problem, I asked George to step in to help resolve our problem. He did, and my gratitude to this man increased. I came to see that this big, sometimes stern man was also sympathetic and caring. During my time at the UO I didn't have a chance to get to know Krys. Since we moved to central Oregon we had the privilege getting to know George on a personal level, and even better, to get to know and love Krys. George surely was fortunate to have such a lovely, spunky, energetic and wonderful wife, and I feel it's important to include her in these memories. We do love you, Krys, and thank you for your kindness to us. We look forward to having more time together when we come to Bend. Shirien Stevens Chappell
